Hi all, it's been a long time since I had a baby (my son is 15!). My daughter is 10 days old and was 9lb born, she has since lost weight at every appointment and is at a 12% loss. I am breast feeding every two hours for over an hour and topping her up every feed. I pump and can get 60ml in 10 minutes so I know my supply is okay. Anyone had this before? Can give me some tips? I currently feel like I'm letting my baby down.

From what I’ve been told, feeds should be between 5-45 minutes. They say to offer the other breast as well on every feed. It could be a latching issue or she could have a tongue tie maybe? When you get your health visit they can have a look at your latching. Or speak to a breastfeeding specialist. They should be free with NHS support. I’ve also had to give mine an extra 60 ml feed after a feed in the day to top him up as he hasn’t started putting on weight at his 10 day appointment. The next day when he got weighed there was an increase! I also felt the same and thought I was letting him down or doing something wrong. You’re not! 💕

Hi lovely! My daughter is 16 days old! She was also constantly losing weight or staying static! We've just gone back to birth weight now she was also exclusively breast fed / pumped but I found giving her the odd formula top up helped her gain the weight as turns out I wasnt producing as much as I thought

This happened with my first.
Can I ask, how tall are you and baby’s dad? All the dieticians and doctors I spoke to, lots of baby’s are “overfed” by the placenta and then they drop down to their own centile.
My daughter was born on the 50th centile and dropped dramatically to the 9th and she has stayed there since. She’s 3 now and still on the 9th.
While I was breastfeeding her, she never took a bottle despite real effort to get her to take one. She also lost weight/stayed the same nearly every appointment or only gained a very small amount!
I also noticed that when I pumped, I don’t have much fat in the breastmilk. The layer was soooo thin!
How’s her latch? Does she have any signs of a tie?

Have you been in contact with the infant feeding team? Or a peer support group? Someone who has further training than a midwife that's all.
Is baby effectively transferring milk?, what does the suck/swallow ratio look like at the beginning of a feed? And the end of a feed? How is the output - wet and dirty nappies?
Only the midwives and paediatricians. 1/2-2 ratio.
Plenty of dirty and wet nappies.

I know it seems scary, but 12% is just over the threshold, so they're right to be monitoring and coming up with a plan, but it's not panic stations. What's your general location? I can help find a breastfeeding support group if you want. I'm a trained peer supporter and would say that support from a group or from a feeding specialist is massively more helpful than a midwife.

For baby’s first week I had to do top ups after every breast feed with 20ml of formula and that was only for maybe three days before we were back to EBF and didn’t need the formula
