Hi! Just joined the group and expecting our first. My other half and I would like to call our baby an English first name and Chinese middle name. However....I don't know what are good Chinese names! My grandmother has made suggestions but they sound quite old fashioned...! Did anyone give their baby chinese names and if so, how did you pick them? (We are having a boy!)

Ooh I'm going to follow along with the post as we'd like to do the same. I did ask my Dad but he wasn't very helpful. I don't speak Chinese well so not sure how the names sound.
I did find this website which might be helpful https://www.chinesenametools.com/

Congratulations Angela! My mums a Buddhist so she asked for her teacher to calculate some names and we chose from one of them. Tbh don’t think many people, if any, do that now 😅 we’re just old fashioned. Hope the other links the mummies sent over help you find something 🥰

we gave our boy English first name and Chinese middle name. We picked the Chinese name from ancient Chinese poetry. If you can read Chinese, poetry is a very good resource, you can find beautiful , meaningful and unique names by picking characters in different lines.

Hi. My mum said to pick a name that sounded nice to me, but being a banana who doesn't speak Chinese very well, I asked for help. My mum went to see a naming consultant or whatever you call one back in Malaysia. He came up with a name based on my son's birth details and now we don't even use the name 😂 but at least he has one!

I used this website https://babytalk.sg/chinese-name-generator/ and basically went through the characters and picked the combinations I liked. We ended up calling our boy 子朗 (Tze Long)

Hi Angela, I picked up the chinese name “Ruo gu” for my baby boy Leo, meaning as open minded as a canyon. It is not very easy to pronounce. It’s from a book by Laozi an ancient chinese philosopher. I never read that book but some phrases are well known in China.
Some friends named their baby “yi an“meaning lifetime safety, or “yi cheng “ a little dragon 😄

I'm Cantonese and having a baby girl and gave my mum the 'task' to come up with a Chinese middle name 😅 I wanted something that is easy to pronounce in English and we will have an English first name. Mum came up with 嘉莉 (Kaylei) 🥰
I have a related question about surnames, are there mums keeping their surname in Chinese so baby will have their Chinese Surname on any Chinese IDs, but keep baby's dad's surname in English? I'm not sure what is right or wrong but like the idea of my daughter having my Chinese surname.

I have friends who have used their own surname as their other half are not Chinese and I don't see a problem with it. I think it'll be fine for you to use your surname 😊
