Coffee during pregnancy

I’ve read you should only have 2 small cups a day but everyone keeps telling me not to have any at all.

I keep it at one cup a day but I want to do what’s best for baby.

What do you think?

When I was prego I had one cup a day too just check with your doctor to see if it’s okay

Avatar

I've been drinking one a day and my OB says it's fine. It also is helping me stay more regular ;) so they'd have to pry it out of my hands at this point haha

Avatar

One cup a day is perfectly acceptable! There is caffeine in other foods too so you should be mindful of what else you are drinking/eating but one cup shouldn’t harm the baby. Personally, I avoided caffeine so had decaffeinated tea and coffee as soon as I knew I was trying for a baby but there were days when I really needed a coffee so I would get one.

Avatar

They say 200mg of caffeine a day! And caffeine can be in drinks, chocolate, foods not just coffee/tea so keep to keep track of that :)

Avatar

I drank decaf ❤️ & it tastes sooo much better. instead of sugar I just used more cream

My first pregnancy (9 years ago) I had 0 caffeine after I found out and was more tired and couldnt concentrate on tasks. This time around I'm having a cup a day and enjoying it and more productive at work. It's not seemingly to make much a difference other than I'm more regular this time around (minus the first few weeks of 2nd trimester) and can keep my concentration better.

Avatar

I nearly had 3 under 3 i wouldn't have had survived without my coffee
I did manage to limit it to 1 and then drank decaf for the rest of the day
Sometimes i had 2 🤷

Avatar

I worked until 38 weeks and with no coffee I would’ve been a mess! 😅 I drank half-caf from Mommee Coffee because it’s low acid and easier on the stomach, but under 200 mg you’re good to go!

Avatar

I had one in the morning, and one small can of coke with my meal in evening, I told my midwife this and she didn’t say anything about it so guessing it’s okay🤷‍♀️

Avatar

My doctor told me that it’s really not a big deal if you have caffeine and if you have more than the recommended amount once in a while, everything will be fine. It’s only when you’re consistently having more than you should that it can cause issues. As long as you’re not having cup after cup, day in and day out, you’re fine.

I wouldn’t stress. I have caffeine almost every day and baby girl is perfectly fine at 20 weeks pregnant. If I don’t have any, I usually wind up with a withdrawal headache.

Avatar

I kept it at 200-ish mg a day. Some
days were a little more, some were much less.

Avatar

I’m actually having one cup right now because the fatigue is real honey ☺️

Avatar

My OB told me not to quit caffeine entirely because I have a history of migraines and caffeine withdrawal can cause headaches. From what I understand 16oz of regular brew coffee is perfectly safe for baby.

Avatar

I’m Colombian, coffee it’s been part of my life since I can remember 😉. I didn’t stop when i was pregnant. My usual… one cup a day😁

Avatar

Thank you everybody! I will be seeing my OB on Tuesday so I’ll run it past her, as well. These comments helped a lot! It started getting annoying with my hubby’s family constantly advising me to drink decaf and me not having a lot of knowledge to back myself up. Ill have this to rub in their faces and soon my OBs words too😂

Btw they advise me in a very caring way! We are all close and they only want what’s best. The only thing is that my MIL only went through one recent pregnancy with her DIL, so they are still learning what’s advised in todays medicine.

Avatar

So my sister looked into the actual research and they haven’t established exactly how much is ok. But it’s also widely used. I honestly had quit it completely early in my pregnancy but I was getting headaches and migraines and we can’t use migraine meds snd my doc actually told me to have a cup of coffee with a migraine. Which helped lol. Currently I am allowing myself up to two servings of something caffeinated a day, be it tea or coffee (but generally only having one).

Avatar

I had coffee whenever I wanted, as long as it was 200mg or less

Avatar

I came off coffee all together about 4 weeks ago and pushed through all the headaches etc. Definitely felt the benefits of coming off the stuff!! However I've caved and got a jar of decaf, I miss a hot brew in the morning 🥴

Avatar

I read 6 ounces a day is all

Avatar

I had decaf one a day. And everything has been fine with me. 37 weeks now xx

Avatar

This may be a little tmi, but my doctor told me to drink one cup of coffee a day to help keep me regular. Idk if that helps, but he told me that coffee won’t hurt the baby as long as it’s in moderation.

Avatar

Been having a cup a day this entire time ! Almost 32 weeks now. Enjoy momma. The fatigue is REAL!

Avatar

My doctor told me it is safe to have a cup of day. Apparently it is safe to have up to 16 ounces.

Avatar

There are a a lot of different opinions on caffeine. Scientific research shows that up to 300 mg of caffeine per day is considered low risk. There is a great book by Emily Oster called Expecting Better and she breaks down a lot of the “dos and don’ts” of pregnancy using peer reviewed science and stats to help you make an informed decisions for yourself. I have a history of MC so I cut out all caffeine in the first trimester and I drink it very occasionally now in my second

Avatar

I was drinking one 10oz cup a day during the first trimester and my ob confirmed that was fine. I drink a 16 oz glass of water along with it. I was also eating a lot of chocolate in October around Halloween lol but realized there’s caffeine in it so I stopped eating chocolate completely and now at 24 weeks pregnant, I’m only drinking one cup of coffee every other day. Don’t let people make you feel bad for having it here and there if you need it. If doctors say it’s okay in moderation then that should be good enough 😊👍

Avatar

The guidelines basically state you can have two cups of coffee a day so I have two cups of coffee a day haha. Stress is also bad for the baby, if it was so bad for baby they wouldn’t let you have any. X

Avatar

I have had one cup a day during my whole pregnancy. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Avatar

I mix my coffee beans- half regular and half decaf for my daily coffee so this way if I want some black tea or something else with a little caffeine in the day I don’t drive myself crazy mentally
But one regular cup a day is fine to have

Avatar

I had a venti Starbucks every morning before work with twins, sometimes once more after work lmao but I did also get a venti iced water to go with it lol.

Avatar

I was told by my doctor that as long as you don't drink more than 200mg of caffeine a day it's fine

Avatar

I try to limit myself however some days impossible so just do you I know some people that drink a lot of caffeine.

I give up coffee for the first 6 months I’ve started drinking it again either that and a cup of tea per day sometimes pop as well.

Avatar

Best is none. However we can’t be perfect. I would try and stick to one coffee and then herbal tea.

Avatar

If you have a chance, the book expecting better by Emily Osler has a great analysis on thr data on caffeine intake and pregnancy. She basically finds that 2 cups a day is fine and even up to 4 cups is okay (standard size). Theres a lot of pregnancy misinformation and old school practices that are not scientifically sound. I found her book really helpful for that! Hope this helps 🤗

Avatar

2 cups is ok I drank 1-2 cups while I was pregnant with all my kids they are fine lol

Avatar

I drink coffee as a treat, maybe 3/4 cups a week and I have around 2 teas a day. I dont think it does any harm in all honesty. Obviously in moderation x

Avatar

Having a cup of decaf per day 🤷🏻‍♀️ my twins are doing fine so hopefully there is no harm on keep doing that. Honestly that one cup of coffee is so much needed lol

Avatar

I would either drink decalf, half caf, or i’d have a latte (espresso is less caffeine than regular coffee). Occasionally I’d have a “real” cup of coffee but not often. I thought it’d be hard cause i love coffee but i got used to it.
Also… just a heads up… as a nursing mom I’m still not drinking regular coffee. Actually, i had to cut out more caffeine cause it was messing with my baby’s sleep. So now i am only drinking decaf 🤣

Avatar

I drink coffee 3-4 times a day, but for my pregnancy i completely cut it off until delivery. If you dont want to do that you could see if decaf is okay. Also if you go solo decaf, i have a sweettooth, so i would recommend limiting sugar intake.

Avatar

I have a half decaf/ half regular coffee in the morning and if I need another one in the afternoon. Really makes a difference being awake and one real shot is enough now. Bodies adjust!

Avatar

My suggestion is to always ask your doctor and stop reading those stupid baby books! Your doctor knows best!
And I drank more coffee than that during my pregnancy and my baby is fine.
Remember our mothers and grandmother's come from a time where drinking and smoking was ok to do during pregnancy and somehow were all fine!
Don't stress so much. If you want a large cup of coffee, you can have one unless your doctor says otherwise.

Avatar

Talk to your Dr. Everyone is different and their body reacts differently to stimulants. My Dr told me one cup is ok

Avatar

I drink as much as I want and my doctor backs that.

Avatar

The general guidance is up to 200mg of caffeine a day

Avatar

Expecting Better by Emily Oster (great book!) makes very clear that there is no issue with coffee. There have been some correlational studies, but that’s because women who are really morning sick (and therefore uninterested in coffee completely) have healthier pregnancies, just hormonally, and it’s causing the sickness. This is one of the most well-studied pregnancy food limitations globally, although in the US they still say around 200mg of caffeine a day in general. If you’d like to limit your caffeine, you can switch to decaf or half caf. I’m having 2 small cups of real coffee a day at this point (about 8 oz in total) if I do have full caf, or decaf the rest of the time.

Avatar

Your doctor is the best person to talk to. I personally had 1-2 cups a day with no issues. It wasn’t until the end of my third trimester that I couldn’t drink it because I had terrible acid reflux.

Avatar

Don't listen to them just watch your caffeine intake and try not to go overboard. I always had a large cup of a frap from McDonald's or a large from Starbucks or scooters (if you have one there) then having decaf towards the end of my pregnancy. You can drink it just drink in moderation. Alot of people can't use their experience because we're all different, you be your best judge about it or ask your Healthcare provider. 💙

Avatar

I think the biggest concern with having caffeine while pregnant is that it will raise your blood pressure but as long as your blood pressure is in a safe range it should be ok

Avatar

I am drinking coffee - 1 to 2 cups a day and so far no issues. My mom had more than 2 cups a day and she was ok too!

Avatar

I was a night nurse during covid while pregnant and nobody was telling me I couldn’t have one cup of coffee. 🤣 Just make sure you are watching your caffeine intake from other things like if you drink tea. Caffeine can dehydrate you if you are not taking in enough water and effect blood pressure which is why too much during pregnancy is not ideal 🤍

Avatar

I was a lot more sensitive to caffeine while pregnant. Even tea would make me jittery and uncomfortable. I'd stay away and just drink decaf.
