Postpartum Essentials

All the essential lists I keep seeing are obviously for the baby and for the hospital bag,but are there any items I might need? I keep seeing these Peri bottles and they seem to have good reviews but not sure if it’s just another pointless thing aimed at new mums.I’ve also seen ice pack things!

Can anyone advise if this is a must buy and if so what else I might need? 😊X

Edit -I’m in the UK and some things seem different in the US

I would! I was given one and ended up having an episiotomy so this was very handy PP!
Maternity briefs, huge pads too and lots of snacks!!!

My hospital provided a peri bottle but I’ve heard that’s not common, but it’s an absolute must! It helps so much when you aren’t supposed to wipe because of the stitches and honestly it’s really refreshing after feeling so gross from all the blood. I would also recommend the ice pack as well. My hospital used the gloves for ice and it was a super awkward size and I wished I would’ve bought one.

Puppy training pads to put under your bottom sheet on the bed incase you leak through in the night saves you ruining your mattress I blead through 2 times the first couple of days and these were a life saver, I still use them now if baby has a poo explosion in the night, so it is used as a changing mat so I’m not changing him and the bed in the process! But definitely invest in a peri bottle it really helped me as I had an episiotomy and had about 35 stitches so was awful to go the toilet without it for the first 4 weeks xx

I bought massive briefs from primark that were perfect 👌🏼 maternity pads from Amazon, ear plugs and an eye mask as it can be really noisy and bright, a book/iPad, a hand fan as hospitals can get really warm and I was told they aren’t providing desk top fans due to Covid (that may have changed now).

I also brought some cooling spray (water mist) which was fab.

Lots of snacks are a must as in my experience the hospital food was a bit unreliable. I packed breakfast bars, sweets for a sugar hit and individual mini soreen loaves. I also brought a pack of lucozade sport to give me a bit of a boost during the induction process.

I bought some ‘spritz for bits’ as I’d heard great things about it but ended up having an emergency section so didn’t use it.

Defo bring some refreshing wipes to freshen up. I took some lavender spray for my pillow to try and chill me out a bit too 🤣

Oh I also brought a tens machine which I used during contractions. I found it really helpful.

Good luck! X

If you’re intending to have a vaginal birth I’d say a peri bottle is pretty much essential. Or another way of getting the same result.

The ‘must’ is a rinse after every time you go to the loo. If you’ve got a bidet, you’re sorted. Or would rather strip off and use a shower head. Or use one of those sports water bottles. Several different ways of getting the same result. But you’ll heal better and be more comfortable with a good rinse regularly, and peri bottles are the easy way to do that for most.

I got a cheap version of the bottle from amazon.
It helped after my episiotomy and now we use it in bath time as a baby shower 🤣 .. she loves it

These are amazing! I used mine for ages while I was healing!
Spritz for bits was also an essential for me
Big black kickers at least 2 sizes bigger
Water bottle with straw for labour
Handheld fan

Definitely disposable underwear. These have been my favourite

Well you can’t wipe after birth for a long time so yeah you’ll need the peri bottle. I just took the one the hospital gave me.

Avatar

Defo get one! Great for stopping your wee from stinging while you are weeing and then to clean after to ensure stitches are ok xxxx

Avatar

I absolutely recommend having one of these! It saved my life in those first few weeks while the stiches heal and wiping is an absolute no no 🙈

Avatar

Definitely need one!

I had an episiotomy so I didn’t use the spritz for your bits or the witch hazel pads I bought. Others say they’re fine to use but I wasn’t comfortable using them on a wound.
Lots of lil-lets maternity pads! Hospital ones suck and these ones are nicely padded. I also had a couple incontinence underwear, came in handy because my water broke! I wore them for the first half of my labor rather than leaking all over the floor lol.

I also purchased some cooling pads from amazon (first days maternity), you just snap them and they get cold, no need to refrigerate. Kinda pricey but honestly so worth it for the first two days.

This is a must for sure. Our hospital provided one though. Take everything you can from the hospital because you are PAYING for it.

Yes. I'm still using this 5 weeks after birth. Spritz for bits also and disposable pants - would recommend these 3 items.

Avatar

I don't think these are common in the UK, I'm also UK based and never even seen this before I had to read the comments to see what it's for 😂 I had no problems wiping after birth I have a bodna wash jug at home to wash but a cup would be suffice they tend to recommended pouring water whilst urinating or fill the bath a little to urinate into to stop the urine stinging. Bodna jug is a few pounds on amazon but these do seem canny

Avatar

Absolutely yes!! One of these saved me I swear! A must have. Xx

Hospital gave us a peri bottle and definitely was useful for first week or so. I’m sure they are not expensive online either, just a plastic squirt bottle basically. But better than wiping with toilet paper while you’re healing, I promise!

Avatar

GET IT. I RECOMMEND A 100%. Best thing to buy for yourself ‼️😂 I still use it just for my menstrual cycle

Avatar

The hospital provides a bottle but it’s NOT angled like peri bottles. The angle is what makes it so great

Avatar

Frida Mom has a postpartum kit or you can buy the things you want separately! I really really liked the cooling pads.

Avatar

They don't provide them here in the UK. At least I've never known then to. X

Avatar

I would gey lil lites maternity pads and big comfy pants. The Peri bottle didn't help and hardly get used.

I would gey lil lites maternity pads and big comfy pants. The Peri bottle didn't help and hardly get used. Just use the shower head. In post natal wards you'll have a shower shared with yourself and another person. Bring a towel, shampoo , shower gel, face wash. From my experience from last year may.

Avatar

I have the Peri bottle and I couldn't recommend it enough, I also very sore after my episiotomy I still use it 3 months after every now and then

Avatar

YouTube is brilliant for this kind of topic! There are loads of vlogs - especially aiming for mums/hospital bags and birth. I had a c section so didn’t need a peri bottle! However, I did buy one - they are meant to be really useful - especially if sore or needing stitches. Maybe worth buying one.

These items were lifesavers for me! https://www.rootandriseblog.com/the-postpartum-care-must-have-items/

Peri bottle is very useful! Get one for sure if your hospital isn't providing for you. I used my bottle every single time I went to the washroom for at least 3 weeks after vaginal birth. Feels absolutely glorious to be able to rinse down there with warm water after doing your business.

Avatar

Depending on where you are - my hospital provided nothing for me. From memory, five pads for PP. I had a cesarean and couldn’t bend at all in the beginning. I used a peri bottle for a while afterwards until I felt I could manoeuvre myself again! 10/10 best invention and definitely recommend!

I’m currently 33 weeks pregnant and I keep getting period like cramps I thought these were Brixton hicks but I’ve heard they only last 30 seconds ish as this can go on for a good time frame then go away and come back, they aren’t bad enough where I can’t do basic things they just feel like I’m about to get my period I’m jus wondering how normal this is? Baby is still very actively kicking xx

Day out after c section

Hey,
I had an emergency c section 1 week ago I obviously don't want a day out right now but I have things booked for the Easter holidays so in 2 weeks. I was just wondering if I will be overdoing it if I have a day out then or will I be ok? I would still take it as easy as I could. When did everyone feel good enough to go out?

C section or natural?

I am a control freak and thinking c section is the least stressful route for me and baby… less complications during labour etc. whilst acknowledging recovering can be hard.
If it could be guaranteed no tearing or complications then I would opt for natural and kind of want to experience the feeling.
Then again could plan and go either way 😂 arghh!
Anyone else in this predicament?

Midwife check

Can someone remind me when the midwife visits you at home? Is it the day after you’re discharged? And is that the same on the weekend or do they not visit then? Thanks!
