Anxiety about going home.

Hi all! I had my baby girl at 34 weeks and we've been in special care for 2 weeks due to her undeveloped lungs. We have had issues with feeding (bottle and breast) and her oxygen dropping low during her meals. She is making great improvements, but has anyone else felt pretty heavy anxiety about taking your little one home and having issues? My husband and I are very nervous we won't be able to "catch" her drops because we won't have a consistent way to monitor her once she's home. The special care team has been wonderful at reassuring they wouldnt send her home until she's ready, but we still feel uneasy. Any device recommendations and/or advice would be appreciated! Thank you! 😊

My babies heart rate would drop while in the NICU...I was scared to bring home..but once home inwas fine. I found that all those monitors they have baby hooked up to caused me to worry more. They will not send home if anything is wrong. We had to stay till he was 4 pounds and off all monitors for 5 days

They won't send you home unless they are ok, which is easier to say then to belive. My husband and I took turns staying up with our lo for the first week but it's unsustainable. I sleep with my head next to her bassinet and hold her for a half hour after she feeds to make sure she's ok. It makes me feel better!

My son was in scbu for 7 weeks and we had the same fear. But as we gradually got closer to going home and me rooming in to the ward - the monitors were gradually coming off. The night before he was discharged I stayed in the hospital - to give you that first night experience as if he was full term. It was a great reassurance to me incase anything happened but he was absolutely fine and that continued when we got home

My daughter was born at 25 weeks. Was in the NICU for 3 months. She was diagnosed with chronic lung diseaseThe same thing you are describing happened to my daughter. She went limp 2 times on me and turned blue while I was feeding her in the NICU. Nurses had to rush in to assist. But the drs did allow me to take home a oximeter to monitor her oxygen levels. She would do fine all day but once those feedings came my anxiety was through the roof. Her oxygen would keep dropping when I fed her once we were home. I took her to get checked and drs suggested to do a swallow study. And sure enough she was silently aspirating. That’s what was causing her to choke silently. So her formula had to be thickened and she did sooo much better and no more choking! She’s one now and doing good with her feedings but I will never forget those scary Times. Maybe ask to see if she needs her formula thickened? Or even bring home a oximeter to help you realize when her oxygen levels are dropping.

I know how you feel. We brought our baby home yesterday after 2 MONTHS of being in NICU. My head is filled with all sorts of anxieties.

Don’t worry. I was the same way. My little boy was born at 33 weeks and I myself as a 26 weeker gave me so much anxiety. But you know what? My boy ended up not needing anything. I mean, It took me months of waking up to check on him. But he was fine… Sometimes the monitors at the NICU are there because the nurses can’t be everywhere at once.
