Opinions on Cyclizine for nausea

Almost 9 weeks and I feel like I’m actually dying. I was prescribed Cyclizine by my doctor for the nausea. It’s debilitating. I’m unable to do nothing 😩 I’m just not sure about taking medication. My doctor said its “safe” and that theirs are no known side effects to the baby and the pregnancy but in the same breath said that it’s not been tested or pregnant women. This is our first pregnancy and will be our only. We struggled so much and we’re lucky to catch on our first IVF embryo transfer. I’m so scared to take this and something goes wrong, I’d only blame myself for taking it. But saying all of this I’m struggling so much. I spend my days on the sofa or in bed that I’m not working. I’m self employed and see clients in the week 9am-8:30pm I fear I’ll have to start cancelling their appointments cause I can’t cope. I don’t want to be telling my clients I’m pregnant just yet either. I just don’t know what to do regarding taking this medication. I know no one can make that decision for me but if anyone has some advice or experience with the medication that would be helpful. This is currently what I’m doing to help my sickness: Eat little and often, ginger biscuits, ginger drinks, eat as soon as I’m out of bed or even before, eating plain food or anything I can stomach, staying hydrated as best I can buy water is making me feel sick, I suck on pregnancy pop sweets, tried the anti sickness wrist bands etc the list goes on. If it’s on the internet Iv tried it. Iv rang my midwife today and yet to hear back from her. Thanks for listing to my moans ladies! 🤍

I am 10 weeks and I was prescribed this, I was trying to conceive for 2 and a half years then was referred for ivf but caught naturally that week, I have taken this throughout so far and have found it has helped, but I also suffer migranes bad and I normally take ibuprofen but everyone says this is a complete no go but I spoke with the GP the other day and he recommended the website called bumps which is what they go off and he said to me you have to weigh up the pros and cons of medications which is really hard but after reading on this website about medications it helped me a lot. For example the other day I was in so much pain with my head I had to think about the fact I couldn’t eat or drink due the migrane but I knew if I took the ibuprofen I would feel 100x better, working in the medical profession myself i decided after the reading I would take the ibuprofen as I was putting my baby through more stress of not eating and drinking and it was a one off and not a on regular basis.

I say personally I have been taking cyclizine and has found it has helped and know lots of pregnant ladies who are prescribed this, maybe have a look at the bumps website and then you can make that decision as you may find you only have to take one a day to help you rather than the recommended dose of 3x a day x

Take it, if it’s horrible you can stop but if you’re already feeling rubbish then there’s nothing to lose when you’re at the point of not coping anyway. Hope it surprises you and that it gives you the relief you need and if it doesn’t you can go back to the doctor and ask for something else

Hi Janine, I was prescribe the cyclizine as I was really struggling as well. I did take them for about a week and so far I haven’t seen any side effects but they have helped to make me feel more myself and actually function. I stopped taking them today because I thought maybe after a week and finding a routine il be ok again and so far so good. My doctor told me they hadn’t been tested on pregnant women but has routinely prescribed them and very little side effects but he can not say never as they haven’t been tested properly. Hope this helps to provide some reassurance and I wish you luck with feeling better soon :)

I took cyclizine for about 2 weeks from being 5 weeks to 7 weeks I didn't have any side effects but it didn't really do much for me at the same time, I started taking folic acid before bed instead of in the mornings and this really helped as I found it triggered my sickness. I also figured out that salt and vinegar crisps completely get rid of my sickness so maybe there's foods out there that might help you too. If its really severe surely there is more the hospital can do for you. Having been through what you have it's understandable you're so worried about the medication affecting the baby, I'd just go with your gut and if you don't feel comfortable trying it, I'd trial and error different things. My experience was it worked for an hour or so but then the sickness would come back, so maybe it's worth it for some relief, even if you try it for a couple of days? Good luck xx

I’ve got cyclizine and prochlorperazine to take together as my nausea was unbearable! Dr had no issues with it and said they’re prescribed for morning sickness and the chances of anything happening are very rare. It’s more dangerous for me to become dehydrated and starving rather than take the tablet. It’s just weighing up the risk factors I guess :)

There is a really good website called BUMPS UKTIS and explains about medicines in pregnancy in non medical terms. Working in health care I often refer patients to this so they can make a decision with the correct information. If you go to the leaflets and select the drug I am sure they will have one on cyclizine
