Hey mamas! I am leaning heavily towards using an IUD for birth control while breastfeeding - but it’s my first time! What’s your experience with it? Do you have a preference?

I have a copper IUD and so far I love it. I had it for a year and a half before getting it out to try for our first, and I got it again after giving birth. I didn't have any excessive bleeding or painful cramping prior to pregnancy, and my period hasn't come back yet after baby. I know everyone's experience with it is different but for me it's been great.

I have the Mirena IUD before baby and after baby. Both times it's been wonderful at preventing pregnancy, but first time I had it hormones made me gain a lot of weight. It might be different for you.

I had the mirena placed and 8 months later I ended up with an ovarian cyst the size of a mandarin. As soon as we took it out, it went away. The insertion was excruciating, but I loved it before I had the cyst. It took some time for my period to regulate to almost borderline nonexistent

I have the copper paragaurd IUD and love it. Had it for 7 years prior to taking it out to conceive our first and then had a new one put in afterwards. I love that it has no hormones as I react badly to them. The first time I had it put in it definitely wasn’t fun but having it inserted after having a baby was a piece of cake. Just felt like one strong period cramp and didn’t really have a ton of cramping afterwards. They say it can make your periods a bit heavier (the copper one specifically) but it didn’t really affect mine too much. I would chose the IUD every time!

I just had a Mirena put in during my C-section. My doctors recommended the hormonal one (as opposed to the copper one) for lighter/non existent periods. I was not taking any chances this time (my boys are 16 months apart, I do NOT want 3 let alone 3 under 3). So far so good 👍🏼

did you normally bleed a lot before you used the copper IUD? /// was it painful for you?

ah yeah I’m already dealing w so much weight gain, 🫠. Did it eventually subside??

see that’s what I was leaning towards as well for the exact same reasons. Birth control with hormones usually made me have my period for two weeks 🥲.

yesss I am so scared I’m going to get pregnant again since it happened so quickly the first time 😅. Thank you for sharing! How was the recovery from it?

I used to have an IUD for a couple of years. I used the copper iud which was amazing (no hormones) but I had a heavy period with it. This time I’m going. To try the Kyleena. I’m actually supposed to get it inserted tomorrow morning! Everyone tells me if you get an iud in after having a baby it’s not nearly as bad of an experience compared to not having a baby and then it getting put in

@Phae I took it out to try for a baby and it turned out to be liquid gain, not fat gain. I gave birth and all that 20+ I gained before and in pregnancy went away and I look skinnier this time around. I'm hoping that this time since I'm more active at work and have to walk there I won't gain much weight as last time. But overall, I loved my IUD and this time it didn't hurt as much as the first time I got it.

I was recovering from the C-section so I'm not sure how much of the recovery was related to the IUD. However, now I barely remember that it's there.

I'm too scared to get one lol all my friends with then said the insertion was absolutely awful. I'm going with the depo shot 😅
