Open mouth breathing

Mine does too but no idea what this means!

Mine does this, and we had a lactation consultant come round and she examined his wee mouth and told us he has a high palate (like his dad!), it was so interesting! But basically it was causing a slight issue (nothing major though) with his latch… she gave us a wee exercise to do to encourage his tongue to rest in the top of his mouth, it’s just a muscle that needs trained but it’s quite important! Do you or your partner sleep with your mouth open?

I sleep with my mouth open and so does my partner and he snores and I think she gonna too she sleeps with hers open 6 weeks old 😅😂😂

😂 my wee boys dad sleeps with his mouth wide open too and it was so interesting to hear it can be genetic! We’ve been doing the wee exercises and his tongue has started to stick to the roof more!

you’re welcome, I had no idea it was a thing I just thought it’s how some folk prefer to sleep, but the nose breathing is really key x

You really want your child to sleep and breathe with a closed mouth. It stimulates a nerve which relaxes us, reduces tooth decay etc.

There is probably a cause such as tongue tie, maybe large adenoids / tonsils / deviated septum. I’d say it’s worth exploring. Maybe join some groups online and do some reading.

My little boy does this but he has a tongue tie!

i think every baby probably does this now and then, i know every adult does, they are still just humans! i wouldnt worry to much but defo ask your HV if it something your worried about to put your mind at ease ❤️

It could be an oral tie. I would get it examined as sleeping with your mouth open can bring a lot of issues
