Last Nap

My little one is 5 months today and has been fighting last nap for almost a week. We are currently having 4 naps a day. The first 3 are short (can sometimes get to 50 min, but most are 35) and last is one now a battle. We would drop to 3 a day but he struggles to stay awake for more than 2 hours so we following that wake window really. Usually wakes around from 6-6.30am. His 3rd nap today ended at 2.30 but did not settle for a 4th nap around 4.30, despite cues. And not for lack of trying/rocking/pushing. He had 8 mins sleep and then just wanted to play with his feet and roll. I gave up at 5.15pm and just started bedtime. He was relatively calm for it and then self settled (as he does at night) at 6pm. He’s been asleep and not stirred once and it’s nearly 8pm, and will now go through the night. So clearly that last nap just seems to be an issue. Napping at home (last one usually is) is in his room, dark, white noise, sleeping bag…
Any other tips welcomed! Thanks

Hey! Wow sounds like you have got a great routine going. I certainly didn’t have this at 5 months! It does sound like that last nap is going to me.

Could you try extending the time your little one is awake between naps by 15-30 mins so that the third nap becomes a bit later and it’s not such a battle to try and get a fourth nap in?

Thank you so much for your reply. I think we’ll have to give that a go where we can. Some days he does go a little longer than 2 hours, but mostly he’s definitely ready by 1:50. We’ll try and extend a little. Would help if he napped a little longer too 😂

when you say he is ready after 1:50 what are his signs? Is he cranky and crying or just rubbing his eyes etc? When we dropped the 4th nap it was because my girl took ages to go down for the last one and the others were all 30mins. She would rub her eyes but not get cranky for almost 30-40mins later so I kept her up longer, found anyway I could to distract her and then within 2 days of doing this she napped for longer and was happy to stay awake longer

what I find more often then not is people put their little ones down to soon! Which can create the same issue.

there was a study that as soon as we see a cue we put it down to tiredness. While yea it could be because they are tired it can also be a cue. Due to hunger, boredom or they just want a change of scene. This isn’t always the case and every baby is different. But it is certainly worth considering.

Good luck

he usually starts rubbing his eyes very quickly after the first grizzle. We’re going to try extending a little today 🤞🏻

You’ll have to let me know how it goes and if it doesn’t work you know it’s bit for you😊

Well, yesterday we had 3 naps. The last one was the longest due to a car journey. We had a more up and down night though (could be the weather and not linked)… we’ll try again today. No car journey planned so could end with just 3 x 30 minute naps and a tired baby but let’s see… 🤞🏻

When do things get easier?

As we entered the 9-12 month stage, my son started crawling and pulling himself up. He also became more clingy and does not play alone, still doesnt sleep through the night, and this week has been sick (so EVERYTHING amplified). I am tired and overwhelmed. Please lie and tell me things get better. 🥺

Colostrum storing?

Has anyone successfully extracted colostrum before the baby’s born? Apparently it gets produced from 16w pregnant and you can start storing it in the freezer but I’m 34w looking at my nipples and the syringes on amazon wondering how it works?? Like what did you use and did it hurt? 🥲

Self settling

Any tips or advice of how to teach 6.5month old to self settle? I’m up multiple times in the night to cuddle her back to sleep and put the dummy in. I understand she will wake up and want a cuddle etc but any tips on self settling would be appreciated 🥰

Baby losing weight

Hi all, it's been a long time since I had a baby (my son is 15!). My daughter is 10 days old and was 9lb born, she has since lost weight at every appointment and is at a 12% loss. I am breast feeding every two hours for over an hour and topping her up every feed. I pump and can get 60ml in 10 minutes so I know my supply is okay. Anyone had this before? Can give me some tips? I currently feel like I'm letting my baby down.

Breastfeeding

Does it ever feel better? The actual feeding part of it is going really well and baby boy is growing so well. I’m struggling with how my boobs feel day to day - it’s really getting me down most days. The let downs make me feel awful and sounds silly but, I am also really missing not wearing a bra! 9 weeks postpartum and still getting fairly engorged, even with comfort pumping.

Any advice or just shared stories would help. I’m so torn between carrying on because I enjoy the feeding side of it or switching to formula.
