Does anyone have any tips for comforting a cluster feeding baby who is fussing at the boob? She is two weeks old, has been feeding for hours and is still doing her hunger cues but once on the boob won’t latch and is rooting around, shaking her head lots etc and crying. If I can calm her down she will latch again, but as soon as she comes off she gets so stressed. I get that she needs to ask my body to up production periodically so this will happen but it’s so hard her being upset and not being able to comfort her with any of the usual tricks 😭 I also think she’s quite overtired at this point.
She’s packing weight on and lots of wet and dirty nappies so no concerns there, in general I’ve been lucky and she’s been feeding really well, would just love any tips anyone might have - or advice as to how you got through similar 😂
Thanks Mamas x

Try offering her before she’s showing her hunger signs…although everything just seems impossible when cluster feeding! Best advice anyone gave me was to forget about night and day, just see days as one 24hr stretch of time with no specific zones so when your up, you’re up and when you’re down, you’re down! It definitely helped me feel better about being ip al night on those cluster feeds!

When my girl does this I wind her over my shoulder. Only time she ever gets winded. Or I will sit her up on my lap for a minute or two to try and break the cycle.
Alternatively I have a feeding pillow which means I can feed her hands free and I just put the tv on to keep myself calm and let her work through it. Idk if when I get stressed about it and force her to stay on etc it works her up more

Thank you 😊 I think the 24 hour stretch of time is great advice as I do feel a bit of the fear when she’s in a cluster feeding day and the evening starts creeping around 😂
We are trying to get her to take a pacifier as I do think sometimes she is comfort sucking, and as she has a really strong side preference my poor boob needs a break 🤣 so far she is refusing it but I do think if she gives it a little try it might help her in the really stressy bits 😊
There’s also a lot of booping her up and down so I think my arm and thigh strength will be increasing at least 🤣🤣🤣

Yes her Daddy definitely gets her out of the milk frenzy, as in those moments I really am just a walking boob to her 🤣🤣🤣 she absolutely loves motion too, so sounds like our babies see similar there!

I use a pacifier too on these situations as my baby is exactly the same. He just wants to suck on something and my breast is currently producing so much milk that when he latches for comfort he hates it cause he does not want milk 😂

My lil boy can sometimes do this in the evening too. I normally find he actually just wants to be close to me rather than feed, so we have skin to skin which settles him. If he's cluster feeding and is overtired I will gently hold him on my chest and sit in a rocking chair which normally sends him to sleep. My tricks for ctrl + alt + delete of cluster feeding 🤣 x

Or as mentioned, someone else to calm them down works magic! As they don’t smell of milk so they won’t get agitated 🤍

I also agree with the skin to skin I find it calms him enough to latch on properly. My little boy fusses at the boob as well I try to stay calm as possible I've also found that he likes to be proped up and for the breast to come to him then I find a comfortable position for me, when hes latched. I also hold him by the neck and not the head so he's not being forced on to me. Maybe you can try some different positions.

Thanks all 😊 skin to skin is another great shout, and often buys us 5 mins if combined with bopping her up and down.

Will definitely try some different positions too - she has preferred ones but I think we both need a little break from that at the moment!

This is exactly what we're going through at the moment! Following for tips 😫

I have been finding this too a few times recently. I end up pulling her away and winding her and 9 times out of 10 she will do a burp. I wonder if thats whats causing it xx

Thank you 😊 she isn’t a particularly burpy baby but we do wind her after each feed. I do wonder if she is sometimes uncomfortable as she doesn’t burp really even if you wind her for ages. But she doesn’t seem uncomfortable in so much as frustrated, if that makes sense

Thanks - you’re absolutely right about staying calm, I think that’s one of the things I struggle with most because I feel myself getting het up and upset that I can’t soothe her. Stepping away for 5 is a great reset. I think it would be easier to cope with on a human amount of sleep too 🤣
I think she is def overtired and seems to be fighting sleep. We’ll be off out in the car shortly and she normally zonks out straight away in the car so hoping that will be the same today 🤞

that’s exactly it, it’s sadness that she is sad and frustration at myself that I can’t soothe her. But I guess it’s important to remember they are learning we are there and they can rely on us even if we can’t fix things every time.
That app sounds great, I’ll def have to look it up 😊
Hope the overtired problem resolves for you soon - just know we are all in this together! 💕

My baby’s been doing this too and I think at times it’s been because he’s windy and needs to burp/fart or she’s too hot. Everyone else has suggested all the things I would have done but I can really relate and it’s hard not to stress when they’re bopping up and down and unlatching themselves. I really can’t wait for this heat wave to pass and 🤞🏼 our babies will be a bit more settled? 😬 maybe

yes we can certainly hope 😂😂😂 she has finally let herself sleep so am hoping that will help her 🤞 hoping for a smooth evening for the rest of you Mamas too!
