Nipple shields

I’ve been using nipple shields since my baby’s birth, because of flat nipples. Although they’ve gotten better with breastfeeding and pumping and the lactation consultant told me I can give her my breast eventually without the shields. But my baby is not having it without the shield and I just get frustrated after few minutes of trying and feel bad for her crying and hungry so i cave in.
My baby is now 2 months and I know shields aren’t and shouldn’t be a permanent fix but don’t know what to do.
Anyone used them for several months successfully? What was your method to wean baby off of them?
I’m just concerned that they’re affecting her badly giving her gas, not enough flow, etc..

I also have flat/inverted nipples. They've gotten better, and we've latched successfully without a shield a few times, but with some fussing and trial and error. Honestly, we may just use them the whole time, it's just a lot easier. When he latched, I made sure they were as erect as possible, and then squished them up as far as possible to help latch. We also had more success taking the shield away in the middle of the feed

I started with nipple shields and have now completely weaned off of them. I have one flat nipple that I was using the shield for every time. It became so annoying bringing them with me everywhere and cleaning them. I’d try to get her to latch without it by kinda squeezing my nipple beforehand to get a little milk out and then trying to get her to latch. She was very frustrated at first but now she got the hang of it.

It took me nearly 2 months to finally get mine off the shields. I almost gave up breast feeding altogether but I was determined. I tried getting her on my breast at least once a day when she wasn’t too hungry, that way she wasn’t getting frustrated. I’d either hand express right before putting her on or I would squeeze my breast while putting it to her mouth to get her to latch better. I kept increasing the times of her being on without them until she got the hang of it. We haven’t used the shields in probably two weeks and breast feeding has gone great. She’s sometimes able to latch herself without me helping her. It’s completely possible but takes lots of patience. Once you guys get the hang of it it’s so much easier.

I have also been using shields since my baby was born. It is very annoying to bring them everywhere and to clean them but I don't even know how to start to stop using them. For some reason it's in my head that if I don't use the shield it's going to hurt my nipples 😔 so I'm not even trying even though I would love to.

it does hurt! It hurt me for about a week straight it was the worst pain. I just pushed through it and now it doesn’t hurt at all when she latches. I think my nipple just had to get used to being without the shield!

I'm going to give it a try the next feeding, but I'm so scared! 😂 I have gone through such a painful bf experience already that I don't want to start over with the pain!

I think it'll work out as long as you try every time you nurse. I totally weaned from them by 4? Weeks of age. Sooner than I thought. And my flat nipple isn't flat anymore. Seems like tissue grew.

A proper latch does not hurt. Feels sensitive maybe tingly. And you feel tugging. Break seal and relatch for wider latch.

Thank you mommas for the ideas I just need to push through it and be patient. I’m really fed up from them affecting my baby in any bad way.

Btw did anyone use the nipple extractor? I was thinking of giving it a try

I just tried to remove the shield mid feeding and my baby was hysterically crying and wouldn't even try to latch 😭

same thing here and if she latches on it’ll be for a couple of minutes tops

I have inverted nipples and didnt know about nipple shields lol (even if i did my stubborn ass prob would have refused them anyway)
Basically it hurt like hell before they finally popped out
It took about 1-2 weeks for them to take a good shape and now they pop out whenever hes hungry. Basically i was just stubborn with it till it worked lmao.

Not drinking

I’m going crazy. Baby born at 2.26kg. Slow to put on weight. This last week hasn’t put on any. Been trying to feed him at night and he’s not interested at all. Fast asleep. During day he will have 5 minute gulps and that’s it. He don’t cry for milk. I’ve got to keep offering to him. I try to offer it every hour but I don’t know what I’m doing. HV said nutrition comes after 5 minutes so I should pump first and then give him. I find it so hard. I tried to pump one boob nothing came. The other abit came. Tried giving him express he’s not interested in that too. Sometimes he will go for a longer a feed but not long at all. He’s 4 months and is currently 5.46kg. I have no family or friend support here and wish I had a cook, cleaner and nanny to help with everything so I can concentrate on the little one. I don’t know what’s wrong with him but I’m loosing it. It doesn’t help that my also stressed generally about my relationship and life circumstances. Any advice that will work. Any comfort you can give. I’m fed up. Is this regression - not feeding. He’s fast fast asleep. I’ve been trying to push the nipple in but that mouth is closed shut. I took some clothes off. Changed his nappy but he’s still asleep. Please help

Leaky nappy help

What nappies are you using to stop leaks?? We use pampers ultra dry size 5, and for the past few nights he has lashed through and we’ve had to completely change him during the night. Last night he leashed through twice!! He sleeps on his front and stays leaks through at the top of his leg where the tabs connect. Didn’t know whether to size up, he has a bit of a belly on him but he’s smack in middle of weight guidance so shouldn’t need too

5.30am wakeups 😫😴

My 15 week old has started waking up about 5.30am and is really hard to settle back down - it’s like he thinks it’s time to wake up for the day. He used to go to bed at 9pm and was up at 8am but now he goes to bed between 7.30-8pm as he’s knackered by then but waking up at 5.30am😴. Any advice to get him to sleep a little longer in the morning?! Even an extra hour would be lovely 🤣

New born

Finally had my baby girl via C-section on the 18th, everything has been so far. But I’ve noticed she’s very fussy and cries a lot. I’ve been trying to exclusively breastfeed. The lactation consultant at the hospital said I did look like I’m making enough milk for her. She was latching on good at the hospital and now here at home, she doesn’t seem to want to latch at all. She’s been crying a lot and very fussy. I’m just wondering is she’s colic or like maybe she just doesn’t want the breast anymore?
