Intrahepatic Cholestasis - Reassurance? Info?

Cholestasis is a diagnosis of exclusion so the bloods that will come back next week will be the ones looking for infections that might be causing the itching such as hepatitis or certain viruses. The ones you'll get back tomorrow will be the liver enzymes nd the bile acids. The bile acids are the key ones as the level of those tends to determine when we recommend delivery. If they're really high (over 100), you might find that they offer you delivery within the next few days as there is a risk of still birth if they're that high. Otherwise it will be either 37 weeks or 40 weeks with weekly bloods to monitor the levels.

So I got the liver function results back yesterday and they said they were all good. So I began to worry less. Then this morning one of the midwife’s has just called and said my bile acid results are back in, and showing a slightly raised level than normal and are currently 23. Apparently normal
levels for this stage in pregnancy are 19.
She told me she’s spoke to the registrar at the hospital and they’re happy to not see me until Tuesday due to the bank holiday. But on Tuesday I need to go in for a CTG and bloods - which I’ll need to have done weekly. If the rise I’ll be induced as you said, if not I’ll just be monitored until I’m at my due date but they won’t let me go over that.

I’m typing this through uncontrollable tears, anxiety and worry for my baby.

Is there any chance the levels can go back down to normal? How come my liver function levels were normal if the bile acid levels are raised? Is there anything I can / need to do?

I’m sorry for reaching out… just really struggling and so scared and alone. Especially knowing that it’s the weekend and I can’t see anyone until Tuesday.

Sorry for the late reply!! 23 is barely raised so you'll get them checked weekly until 40 weeks then be offered induction. I promise, if I thought you needed seeing before then I would tell you! With those levels there is no increased risk above background. Promise. Xx

For still birth. Higher levels (higher than 100 or 40 to 99) carry higher risk. 15 to 39 have no increased risk. X
