How are we all collecting colostrum? I used a teaspoon and got 2mls, and sucked it up into the syringes but now thinking that I stupidly just lifted the teaspoon from the cutlery drawer so that makes it not sterile is that right? So I can’t use this for baby?
I’d find it too awkward to syringe straight from my nipple - so do I literally have to boil a teaspoon in boiling water for 2-3 minutes before I can use it? I have a tommee tippee steam steriliser but haven’t set it up yet. Also have a haakaa manual pump but haven’t looked into cleaning it yet.
Feel like I’m asking a stupid question 😢

I think it would have to be sterile yes. So boil it as that's probably easier than setting up a whole steam sterlizer. I use Milton cold water tablets/solution as I find that's quick and easy.
My midwife told me not to use any type of pump for colostrum, including a haakaa. X
thank you x

I found it easier to just use the syringe straight away and collect all the drops. You are however constantly getting rid of air bubbles xx

I think using the syringe is best for me but it does take a bit of a patience. Or maybe get a very small plastic container that you can sterilise. I think that's what I'll do. I just started so feel like if quantities grow a small container will be helpful.

Actually my midwife said as long as the container is clean it doesn't need to be sterile (although the syringes usually are). The colostrum is antibacterial, the same as breast milk, so sterilising isn't as big of a concern as it is with formula

Oh fuck I never even thought about this. Will I need to throw away my syringes so far if I used a teaspoon before the syringe?
I know I’m gutted - it didn’t dawn on me until I read something on here! mines still in the freezer and then tonight I boiled a friggin teaspoon to use and didn’t get any colostrum 🤣

I use the lid of a bottle.. very easy to sterilise and easy to catch the droplets :)

Lid of a baby bottle that is

Good news- saw my midwife yesterday and she said as long as spoon was clean it’s all good, colostrum/ breast milk is antibacterial
Aw brill!! Thank you so much for the info!
