Is it standard practice to be drug tested during pregnancy? I have a Quest account and therefore get sent my test results directly. I was surprised this morning to see that my OB did a drug test at my last visit, as this wasn't mentioned to me. It's no problem because I'm not using any drugs, I'm just curious why this was done without discussing it. Anyone experience this too?

They’re not standard in the uk.. you’d have thought though whatever they’re testing you for you should be made aware of before hand x

Yeah I was drug tested at the end of the first trimester, but they also told me that was part of the blood tests they run so it wasn’t a surprise. Sounds like your OB could have been a bit more communicative.

The tested me too, no warning. I found out after

Yes

I just had my first trimester bloodwork and urine testing done and I didn’t have a drug test. Maybe differs state to state?

Did you mark at some point on intake paperwork that you’ve done drugs in the past?

I did not but I'm in Pennsylvania. Maybe it's a per state thing?

from what I was told they don’t tell you bc they basically wanna catch ppl by surprise if they are using

it’s not illegal bc it’s done all the time a lot of places patients are not told it just varies
it just so happens that where I live they don’t tell u bc they don’t want ppl to prepare for the test they want to catch it bc alot of people aren’t honest abt drug use.

They did two when running my blood so far and i’m 29 weeks, I asked why they did it after seeing they did another one and they said it’s a routine test at the office I use. They never told me either but I also had nothing to worry about, a few other people I know also had them done randomly when pregnant!

Yes! Especially if you live in an area where that’s a common issue. I used to live in an area where meth was a common drug of choice, most OBGYNS would refuse to see you unless you’d submit a UA prior to the appointment. I don’t blame them honestly, they need to know what they’re working with and what your risks are.

In our state it is required but I don’t think it is everywhere. It is kind of odd they wouldn’t have mentioned it at least at the appointment before the test was done

I don't think I had one

Thanks everyone, for your responses, they're very helpful! I definitely understand the need/benefit for the testing, I just didn't know if it was an oversight of my doctor to not tell me, or if like one of you mentioned, it was intentional. Thanks again!

no, I didn't. Maybe it is a state thing. 🤷♀️

@Taylor that makes sense.

They will do a drug test at the hospital too 🙃 just so you're prepared for that bill

I'm in Texas and afaik haven't had any drug tests

If you're in the US and on Medicaid, then yes, it's totally normal.

When I was pregnant in Fl and was being seen every 2 weeks. They were testing me every 2 weeks, I found out when I got the insurance bill. I called the office and went mad and spoke to the drs about it who said it was ridiculous and she’d sort the charges. But yeah it’s crazy how they told tell you when it’s your health and you paying the bill.
