I do not have colostrum yet, but I decided I will collect it once it starts coming.
For those who don’t know, colostrum is the first breast milk we have and it is full of benefits for the baby (it is not only very nutritious, it also helps them with their first 💩 and their gut health in general, and it boosts their immune system).
Anyways, there are a lot of good reasons to start collecting it… but I wanted to mention a very important one that at least I didn’t hear much about: it is especially important for those moms who got diagnosed with gestational diabetes (like me) to save some colostrum if possible. Our babies might have trouble holding their glucose level within a healthy range, and having colostrum saved can ease the process of avoiding hypoglycemia (especially if for some reason we don’t have breast milk at the moment).
My doctor told me it is a great idea but I need to do it starting at 37 weeks.. I think it’s because the breast stimulation could induce labor.
Anyways, I just wanted to share this info with you guys.. if you’re interested in doing it, Amazon sells everything you need to safely store it until baby arrives. I’m getting a set from haakaa and it’s like $20.

Thanks for the info! I have GD as well. Has your due date moved up?
Also there's an Instagram page bridgettesheri she posted how to collect colostrum 2 days ago if you'd like to check it out (using hakaa as well). She has GD as well.

Thanks for the info I have GD as well, would GD affects us to breastfeed our baby? Im 32 weeks and I don't notice any changes dont have like leakage/colostrum or anything! Any idea if GD affects breastfeeding or not

interesting post. I bought the haakaa colostrum collector already because I was also planning on doing that, I now have to repeat my glucose test since I failed. Could you please point out what major eating habits you had to introduce after being diagnosed with GD? I feel so lost about it all. I eat mostly plant based so I don’t get it why I failed 😞

Also are there signs that we can breastfeed or not during pregnancy or anything to be aware of

No, so far it seems like my GD hasn’t affected him. But they will keep monitoring 💜 how about you?
I’ll definitely follow her!! Thank you so much!!

I don’t think it affects (not sure) but if we’re induced or get a C-section, we’re more likely to have some kind of delay in our milk production.

check out “the glucose goddess “ on Instagram.. I follow her hacks and haven’t had a single glucose spike since then

thank you. Will definitely do that.

it has nothing to do with your diet, your body isn't creating enough insulin during pregnancy. I'm sure your doctor can provide more info! I've stopped drinking milk in the mornings and fruit as well. I usually leave that for lunch or dinner time. But mostly cut carbs a bit and making sure the breads I eat are whole grain and fiber! Eat small meals instead of big ones and snacking in between meals (Greek yogurt, nuts, etc) helps too. Your physician should be able to give you a guide on what types of food are good for you! Honestly nothing is off limits in my opinion you should have to be moderate in your intake.

thank you Natalia. I am freaking out a little bit to be honest, and Luli just suggest a page on Instagram that blew my mind 🤯

it's normal to freak out! I definitely did too and cried LOL. It's difficult but you'll adjust in no time

You’re most likely producing colostrum already and it just isn’t leaking or showing. Some women it never does until after delivery. This was my case with my first. But I’m definitely going to make a real effort this time to try to collect right at 37 weeks. Maybe work with an IBLC. My daughter was born at 37+2 and had trouble extracting colostrum from me. So we had to supplement with formula the first couple days. She had no issues transferring once my milk came in day three but I’d rather have the colostrum so we don’t have to go through that stress again

great info!! Thank you so much!!

I had an appointment today and he's measuring on time. I was actually asked to eat more LOL so I'm kind of relieved. My due date changed slightly from December 19 to December 16 but it was moved before I knew about having GD

Sounds great do you have the link ?
