I have been breastfeeding my little one, however starting transitioning to formula. I have been thinking about buying a prep machine but have heard that they are not reccomended? I can’t find any recent nhs advice on this, does anyone know more about this?

They aren’t recommended by health professionals due to previous issues of cleanliness (mould found inside the machines). The “hot shot” method isn’t advised by the nhs and they also put a lot of air into the milk which can make babies quite uncomfortable and windy.

Interestingly.. there’s a very new study that came out this morning stating many prep machines are not dispensing hot enough water to kill bacteria!
Personally wouldn’t use one but if you choose to I would recommend researching the risk of PIF bacterial contamination.
All babies are ‘fine’ till they suddenly aren’t!

The NHS advice is mostly about breastfeeding.. not as much support for bottle feeding. The prep machine is really useful to have instant bottles ready rather than boiling up water and having to wait for it to cool I do recommend it defo makes feeding easier. There is an antibacterial filter to make the water sterile.

beat ya to it 🤪

If you have any doubt, speak to your health visitor about them.
Remember there’s lots of things on the market that are unsafe for babies, for bumpers etc. just because something is sold and used by many, doesn’t make it safe or best for baby.
Have a chat with your HV and do some research and come to your own decision.
I’ve never used one and never will, we have no issues making bottles without it.

I don’t personally think the machines are very well made (had two break) and mixed advice on how good for baby. Since we moved to making them up using kettle and then keeping in the fridge for up to 24 hrs we’ve preferred it and baby now has much less gassy pains! We combi feed for reference x

I saw this new study as well and will be getting rid of my prep machine (not used it since baby was about 4 weeks old anyway). Prep machines are also super bubbly.
We have two nuby rapid cools which we use to make up bottles (not just the hot shot method people mention - we make the whole feed in it but know the hot shot method works well for others 😁). Formula is ready in a few minutes and you can shake the rapid cool hard to mix it well but then pour into the bottle tilted on its side for absolutely no bubbles whatsoever. We have two so there’s always a sterilised one for the next feed. I mainly breast feed but do three bottles a day and am happy with how this works for us x

see with keeping it in the fridge , do you then heat the bottle up? Or give it cold? Sorry I actually have nooo clue about formula 😂

My boys 5 months and I’ve used a prep machine since he was like a month and half.. I’ve had zero issues, he’s never been unwell or had any issues with being gassy, I change the filter regularly and clean it every week with white vinegar.. each to their own 😊

same never one issue. Many of the problems are if you don't keep it clean and don't change the filter. It's a life saver. I have the nuby rapid cool but miss my prep machine if we go away anywhere. The bubbles are caused by shaking the formula too much when adding to the hot shot. I just ensure to swirl it instead of shake.

we have a tommee tippee bottle warmer but can just put in a jug of hot water. Our LB doesn’t need it warm, just not ice cold! But we combi feed and when we’re out and about we normally use expressed milk that’s okay out of the fridge for longer or pre mades if occasionally needed so I’m not really the one to ask for how to deal with powder formula for all day or when out and about if that makes sense?

Hi! I have the baby brezza and swear by it, best thing ever. Makes a bottle under 20secs and saves my life when he's crying through the roof.
It's s lot of money but definitely one of my best investments.
