My baby boy was just born this morning and I’m new to nicu experience I just want to know how long he could be in the nicu? He’s 5 lbs 18 something inches, he’s breathing good on his own, he’s regulating his temperature, he isn’t sucking they have him on a feeding tube.

My son was born at 36 & 5 7lbs7oz and had to stay in the nicu for 2months due to him not taking from the bottle they eventually sent him home with a gtube

Honestly, sounds like he won’t be there very long at all.. he’s practically healthy from what you’re saying.
Of course every experience is different.
If it helps any, my firstborn was 28weeks, with RSV, jaundice, on oxygen support and a feeding tube, and 3lbs 3oz. He was out in 3 weeks.
Your baby’s at a healthy weight and only has a feeding tube. That was the quickest part for my little, the tube. I imagine your sweet boy will be home with you in no time 🩵✨

First and foremost congratulations on your bundle of joy but honestly since he's breathing on his own and meeting oxygen I'm assuming and can regulate his temperatures and he seems to be at good weight he could possibly go home on an NG Tube but sometimes they like to keep them there at least until her due date it all honestly is just up to your baby boy

My baby was born at 31 weeks. She was in nicu for 3 months. No breathing trouble or anything. She couldn't take a bottle. She finally went home on an ng tube. They told us. 4 weeks at the most but that didn't happen. So honestly it really depends on babies timing and when he is ready for things. Hopefully it won't be to long! Congrats on your baby!

As long as your son wants he notices he is out of the womb and can start eating then he will be able to go home my Hospital one of my daughter to eat 80% feedings a day per shift

My son was 33w and 6 days. He was in the same situation, and he was in for 2 weeks. It all depended on how quickly he learned to eat and how his O2 and stuff was. It’s rough, but totally worth it to know they are alright before you take him home.

My sweet boy was born just a month ago at 35w2d. He was in the NICU in great condition for 13 days. The only thing he needed to master was eating enough without the feeding tube! That's the big one. It's hard to say how long that would take. My advice is learn feeding tips from the nurses and take an active role in helping him learn how to feed. It mostly depends on when your baby is ready to eat, BUT you have a lot of power in helping your baby figure out what works for him. We ended up having to ask to room-in with my little one to prove that he COULD eat well, it just had to be done a certain way. We were right, he was discharged, and now he eats SO MUCH.
