Really struggling with feeding my 2 and a half week old son. He roots for food about every 3-4 hours. We feed him and he then screams afterwards and continues to root like he's still hungry. We wind him multiple times during the feed and he's even trying to eat my shoulder and face as I wind him 🤦♀️ - is this normal? Does anyone else's baby do this?
I spoke to midwife about it on Thursday and she said because he was a small baby, he shouldn't need any more than 90ml. He's just had a feed, had approximately 120ml and is still crying for more! What am I doing wrong?! It's making feeding time so miserable 😩

Is he just looking for comfort? Does he use a dummy? Could it be the formula he is on? Just throwing ideas out there!

If I offer him a dummy after he will take it luckily. Could be formula but unsure how to go about changing it

Could it be he has lower wind and is uncomfortable because my newborn searches for food when he’s uncomfortable vs hungry sometimes and I do cycle legs stretch and compress till he passes wind and after he stops searching and relaxes

Mine does this! I’ve only after 4 weeks figured out why. The initial cry is a hunger cry - when babies blood sugar drops (aka hungry) a suckling reflex is triggered, their tongue touches the roof of their mouth. When they cry, the tongue gets pushed away from the roof making a “N” sound so could be “Neh” or “Nah”. You can also watch it and see the tongue moving (if you sit them upright it’s clearer to hear and see). So then I feed her, any slight disinterested she shows in the bottle I pause and burp her, then give her more till the suckling slows or she pulls away, then I stop. Then she cries and gums her hands. - I previously thought she was hungry, she’s in pain and gums for comfort. If there no “N” sound in the crying she’s not hungry, an “eh” is a burp. An “argh” or “aigh” is tummy pain - either overfull or farts! I’ll paste a link to a TikTok account who’s really good at explaining it all, it’s really helped and she hardly ever cries now

My daughter is like this, we just give her a dummy and she settles quickly and is absolutely fine from then 😊

It’s totally normal don’t feel like a failure. If he’s got wet nappies and poops you’re doing amazing. My daughter does this. Sometimes they actually just want soothing instead. You’re not a failure for trying a dummy. Just only give it after you have tried feeding

Mine is 3 weeks old and sometimes does this, she’s a savage 😆 I try and catch her now before she gets too hungry and cries and she’s much more settled. She does get a lot of wind and is obviously uncomfortable at times. Olivia has had 120ml from 2.5 weeks, sometimes she eats it all, sometimes she doesn’t, I just know she will be more hungry before the next feed so I’m prepared
