Midwife appointment

Hey everyone 🤗, I have my first midwife appointment tomorrow. How is it looking? What are the questions you had prepared to ask them? I am new to the whole NHS system so any info is good info. ❤️

My questions :

- Shall I get the vaccines done?
- Are the vitamins I take good and adapted?
- When shall I avoid flying?
- Is there risks with HPV? (That's for me :/ )
- How accurate is the due date?
- How often will I get to see you? Can I call you if I have issues?
- What other tests will I have?
- How often / how long can I run?
- When should I go on maternity leave?

As well as any questions that you want to prepare, you may also want to talk to the baby’s father and make sure you have some answers prepared too. They ask a lot about family history of medical conditions, from bone and blood conditions to also things like depression and drug taking too.

I don’t know my husband’s family that well as they live in another country so that threw me and I had to make a lot of assumptions!

But you should expect the midwife to lead the conversation and they should offer out advice without you needing to ask. The main thing is to know how to contact them so if you think of things later, you can go back to them.

The biggest thing for me, was not knowing who to call when I had some bleeding/fainting. So maybe ask for any numbers and who to call if you have any concerns during the early weeks.

They also ask you (I’m pretty sure as I think they did at mine) if when you have your 12 week scan if you want to get baby tested for Down syndrome and edwards and I can’t remember the other one. You can choose to have all of them, the DS one and not the other, or none. Some parents don’t like to know, so make sure you discuss that with your partner. They’ll do that through a blood test.
They’ll strongly encourage you to get the whooping cough vaccine, they may encourage you to get the covid/flu one too, but that’s your choice, you maybe want to speak to them about that.
If you forget any questions, you can ask at the next appointment, or if anything is pressing contact your local midwifery team. I just made a list and would ask at my next appointment.
I also second making sure you know anything in your partners family history that might be important.
I had a great first midwife who gave me her phone number to text with any questions. The rest didn’t but I still knew who to contact!
