Is anyone giving their EBF baby the infant Gaviscon for reflux? If so how are you doing it? I’m finding it so fiddly trying to do it with a spoon mid-feed - tips very much appreciated!

I found that the amount of water needed to mix the sachet was impossible to give and my little boy just ended up bringing it back up.
He is now on in omeprazole and I express each feed to put into a bottle with gaviscon.
I did read somewhere that you can make it into a paste instead but this didn’t agree with him either 😒
Oh, I’m glad it’s not just me! It seems like way too much liquid for him. My GP is very reluctant to prescribe omeprazole as my boy is gaining weight well despite (constantly!) bringing up his milk - are you having success with it?

I use these bottles:

I mix the gaviscon with 5ml water and 10ml breastmilk. He takes it no problem.
Katie can I ask how your LO is getting on with the omeprazole? I am speaking to the Dr again this week to discuss getting some to try instead of the Gaviscon. The Gaviscon does work, but I only give it with the night feeds because I'm scared of him getting constipated. Plus it would be a lot easier to give something once per day instead of with each feed which is especially fiddly when BF!

Omeprazole has definitely helped with the pain and discomfort he was suffering from but didn’t completely stop the vomiting.
The only thing I found that worked was to express each feed and give through a slow flowing bottle with gaviscon added to that. He’s still occasionally sick but no where near as much as before.
How old is your little one?
Ours was gaining weight but slowed down around the 10 week mark. I’ve just tried to introduce a bit of formula which came straight back up ☹️ x

He is 10 weeks as well. He is gaining weight fine and although he is sick with most feeds, I'd say it is just normal baby sick. He doesn't projectile vomiting or anything. His main problem is acid reflux. He ends up coughing, choking and gulping and sometimes cries out in pain. He sometimes fusses and arches his back while feeding. But he does lie on his back fine, when I know some babies really struggle with that. So difficult knowing what is best to do. Fair play to you expressing every feed, I could not be bothered with that! So you can use the omeprazole and gaviscon together? Have you had any side effects from the omeprazole?
Sorry to hijack this post!
Really interesting to hear expressing and bottle feeding has helped - perhaps I should try that. My boy is 8 weeks, is sick after every feed and often wakes himself up in the night being sick (even though I keep him upright for about 30 minutes after every feed). It’s hard on us both. I’m glad you’ve found something that has helped your little one though - fingers crossed we will too x
These look good! So do you just put the Gaviscon mixture in there and otherwise breastfeed? Or express the whole feed? x

Ah I completely sympathise with you, mine was the same, very sicky even throughout the night.
I put part of it down to not knowing how much he got through breastfeeding (I think he was getting too much, but he still seemed hungry) and I also have a fast flow which his stomach couldn’t handle. Also one of the doctors told me that breast milk is so thin that some babies struggle to keep it down xx
I hope you find something that works for you both 🤞🏼
Does he seems in pain from it?
He sometimes seems like he has trapped wind (and cries/writhes around then), but mostly I don’t think he’s in pain from it - he’s been known to throw up in my face and smile at me at the same time 😂 I do wonder if he takes in too much milk sometimes too as he just seems to enjoy feeding, and I have no way of knowing how much he’s actually had. Interesting about breast milk being thin too. My GP is basically happy to just wait for him to grow out of it as he’s generally happy and healthy and growing well, but I just feel so bad that I can’t fix it for him. Will persevere with the Gaviscon for a bit and see if it gets us anywhere x

Yes, I BF and then towards the end when he seems to be getting full/sleepy I give him the Gaviscon. I mix it with the breastmilk to disguise the taste a bit. It really has helped us, but I try to just give it during the night feeds.
Just doing it during the night feeds seems a good idea. Do you mix up the solution ahead of time or do you have to get up and do it before each feed?

I do it ahead of time and take it up to bed with me.

Mine doesn’t have gaviscon but instead has Simeticon (LeFax/Infacol) - it’s two tiny squirts from the bottle into their mouth and I can continue breastfeeding. Works so well!
