My 18 month old CAN say several words, but she rarely says any. She says thank you, dada, shit, okay, and eat regularly.
She says several other words but only sometimes.
At her appointment they were concerned she doesn’t pretend okay and point at things she wants.
He said she was fine and normal and that because she babbles so much her speech is likely to explode around age two.
Fast forward two weeks and today I get a packet in the mail for a referral to a disability clinic for an autism checkup. She has zero signs of autism except these communication delays.
I guess I’m just curious where other 18 month olds are, and if this is normal? I have known kids who spoke a lot at her age and others who didn’t even start speaking until acter age two and none are autistic.

This sound exactly like mine and my dr did the autism check up at our visit and says they do it for every 18 month old so maybe they just do it outside of the main office where you are

My 18 month old son is the same way. He only speaks like 5-8 words. His doctor is concerned as well but I know that kids will speak on their own. Our doctor wasn’t going to push anything on us until we got concerned on the delay. My best friend son did start to talk until he was 3 years old almost 4.

Absolutely normal! Mama completely normal. Kids don’t usually talk till later & all those words she does already say are great & you know that. Don’t let the doctors get you down. Mine have given me so much miss info since my son was born. My nephew didn’t start till he was like 2 & 1/2 he definitely does not have autism. My son will be 2 soon & is just starting to talk more. Not every kid is the same & has the same timeline. I would be concerned if he wasn’t saying any words at all but that’s not the case. Take a deep breath you baby will be fine & will talk more as time goes on I bet you. Your doing great 🫶🏽

I think the concern is coming from her not wanting to use the language that she knows. It’s that social aspect that may be the concern not the language itself. Did you guys do the MCHAT screener?

Try to teach your kids a different language. You will see a surprise. My kid could say other language very well on the first day my friend taught her. (She barely speaks English words)

yes she has no other signs of autism. Eye contact, responds to her name, she understands most of what I tell her or ask her to do, she likes playing with other kids, walks normal, no repetitive movements or speech, babbles a lot, etc

we introduce her to Spanish because she is Hispanic, but she doesn’t speak any of those words, ever lol.

I wouldn’t worry about it, they likely just wanted you to have the option of early intervention if you want it.
A ton of kids only say a few words consistently until one day around 2 or shortly after they just start saying all sorts of things.

then add another language. Try English, Japanese, Swahili, etc. The purpose is to see the kid has No Talk Problem. There is no such thing called Autism. Special Kid has special talents. Every kid has his super power.

We had early intervention come out at 18 months and it was great! They did so many activities with him and they look at so much more than just if they can say words. Our guy is behind on speech as well but not behind at all on communication. He passed all their “tests” with flying colors and is just not ready to say a lot of words.
I guess what I’m saying is, it seems like you’re in the same boat as us and early intervention did wonders to ease our concerns 😁
