Reflux

My baby boy is 14 weeks tomorrow and I literally feel like I’ve been fighting a loosing battle from him being about 5/6 weeks old.
Started off with colic and constipation and what the gp thought was a cows milk protein allergy so put him on a prescribed milk after trying sma stage 1, sma comfort and kendamil. We seemed to get on top of all that apart from the milk wasn’t making much difference with the sickness or diarrhoea. So wasn’t convinced it was an allergy but stuck with it until a week ago as recommended by the gp.
Anyway forwards onto when he was around 9 weeks old and the gp suggested that he could have reflux as well so they put him on gaviscon and Omeprazole. Gaviscon didn’t do anything except for make him constipated. So stopped that. The Omeprazole just kept being upped in the dose as again didn’t seem to be doing nothing. He now has the liquid form and is on 18mg a day. Again not noticing any change in him being on it so going to stop it as suggested by the gp if it wasn’t doing anything.
At 11 weeks old I was out with him and he had what looked like a type of seizure. Locking his jaw together, stiffing his body, holding his breath and completely vacant in his eyes, got admitted to hospital for 2 nights and mri and eeg done and they were all normal thank god. We’ve had more of these seizure type of things since but the doctor is saying it’s what they call a BRUE event and what they believe to be caused by his reflux and the pain it’s causing him.
As you can imagine as a parent it’s the most horrific thing to witness and I’m just at my wits end. As I feel if he’s in so much pain that he’s having these unexplained events then there must be something that can help him. I’ve now put him onto cow and gate reflux milk which is definitely helping with the sickness and he’s pooing more regular and they are not as runny. But he’s still screaming on and off which you can tell is a ‘I’m in pain cry’ and just very unsettled.
Has anyone gone through anything similar? I just don’t know what else to do to try and help him. Sorry that it’s a long one but thought maybe on here that someone may have some advice for me. Thanks for reading xx

I’m currently going through this and I’m getting nowhere with it 😫😫 hurts me so much to see my boy in so much pain x

it’s awful isn’t it hun. Has your little boy had the seizure type of things as well? X

Avatar

yeah it really is!! he’s been having a BRUE event but he goes into full on shaking whilst holding his breath and then screams straight after it’s horrible to watch :( x

Avatar

oh bless him. See my boy screams for a long period before hand and then stops and not long after has the episodes. The second time it happened he had 10 of them in an hour. Xx

Avatar

Have you videoed him doing them so you can show the doctors, so that they can be sure it is that!
It sounds absolutely awful for you as a mother and that poor baby! Beautiful by the way.
Have you tried going down the private route for a second opinion xx

Avatar

yes the second time it happened yes we filmed it. The doctors said they still couldn’t be sure what was happening but think it’s happening due to the pain from the reflux. Thank you. No not thought about going private x

My girl has been very similar and probiotics have helped her hugely with pain and reflux, omeprozole only made her worse, we use gaviscon occasionally still if it seems like it’s bothering her a lot.
She would’ve sometimes done what looked like a massive startle reflex, it only lasted seconds but she would go all stiff and tense and red and then scream, I always thought it was reflux pain bless her. She’s more settled now just using the probiotics and hipp organic formula, oh and trying not to let her go too long with no food, more little and often helps.

I’m going through similar with my 8 week old. Almost every night he’s screaming in pain until he stops breathing and goes purple. He’s so vacant and goes rigid when it’s happening and it’s absolutely terrifying to watch.
I went to the GP and got told it’s ‘first time mum syndrome’ and that he’s absolutely fine and honestly I just don’t even know what to do anymore. It’s definitely reflux but they just don’t want to do anything to help him 😭

Avatar

thank you. Sorry to hear your little one going through the same. We were using optibac for a couple of months but again nothing really changed while using it. Xx

Avatar

oh bless you. I feel for you. Just keep pushing and pushing with the gp hun you know your baby best. Demand you want something to give him to try even. I hope something happens for you xx

Hi, I am sorry to hear your story 😔 we are going through exactly the same thing 15 weeks old, bad reflux, awful colics and potential CMA. Doctors are giving they’re opinion but not solutions, we’ve been to A&E few times, Gp every week and private. It’s awful looking at this little humans struggling and we can’t do much to help.
We’ve tried everything and nothing really seems to help in long term.

Hiya, just a tip trying using the forward facing chair when in the pram as acid is worse when lying down. Try keep him upright as when we lay down the acid naturally flows upward but is much more intense with reflux. Did you have acid when you was pregnant? If you did you’ll remember how awful it was to lay down. Hopefully this helps xx

Avatar

aww bless you hun. It’s just the worst isn’t it. As awful as it sounds im so glad to know I’m not the only one going through it with my little boy. It feels at the time as if you are alone and it’s only yours it’s happening to. I hope things get better for you soon xx

Avatar

thank you. No I didn’t really when I was pregnant. Just a couple of occasions with heartburn but nothing major. X

Avatar

Literally going through the same thing right now!! It’s so stressful we’re on aptimal pepti 1 and still no difference. The gps just fob you off and say they’ll grow out of it 😒

Avatar

aww bless you. yep that’s what we were on. I was so convinced he didn’t have an allergy I took him off. Yea we were told the same thing. I hope things are better for you real soon. Xx

Avatar

good luck 😊 xx

Our little girl doesn’t have reflux as serious as this though did have a hospital trip like yours when she was 8 weeks. We did Pepti 1, thickener and nothing worked so tried goat milk formula after a call with an osteopath, she’s been a different baby. We use Nannycare. X

Avatar

I’ve heard about this goats milk. I think that will be our next step is trying that. Thank you xx

I could have written this! Except for the seizures, but my girl does have periods of frequent startling which I’m absolutely convinced is from reflux pain. Although gps don’t believe me and keep telling me ‘some babies are just hard work’ 😳 my girl is now on alfamino CMPA formula and gaviscon. We tried carobel with no effect. She’s so constipated but I rung the gp yesterday and she said gaviscon doesn’t cause constipation but I’m sure it does! She’s also the worse feeder in the world, it takes so long and she hardly wants anything, assuming because she’s uncomfortable! Have you looking into if your little one may have a tongue tie? I felt my girl did and was told by so many people she didn’t. But it turns out she did and had no movement in her tongue at all! Apparently this can cause a lot of colic/reflux symptoms if they have one?xx

Avatar

aww I really for you hun. It’s so awful isn’t it when you feel your not being listened to. Yes we’ve been checked for tongue tie and he doesn’t have it. We tried that milk also and my little one wouldn’t take it at all. Gaviscon 100% does make them constipated it’s a well known thing. Crazy how one doctor says something different to another. Xx

Avatar

sorry you’re going through this - it’s so tough isn’t it. Our little girl is 13 weeks and has gradually become a bit more settled. I think she has silent reflux. We’ve had a few night time occasions (first time called 999 as only a week in) where I think she brings milk up internally but it goes into her airways so she struggles to breathe a bit 🥴 hasn’t happened as bad since, apart from a few nights ago, and she manages to clear it eventually just sounds really congested after but it’s v scary. We’ve ended up on HIPP organic comfort milk which we’re sticking with for now. Could I ask what a BRUE event is?

Also what probiotics do you use / when does your little girl have them?

She also has the seizure type thing randomly too - suddenly goes bright red/tense/strains/holds breath. I explained some of this stuff to the health visitor on Friday and the only response was typical ‘she’ll grow out of it’ 🙄 so helpful !

Hi Kayleigh, we are going through exactly the same (minus the seizures) with our 13 week old boy. I feel like the worse parent in the world when my son screams himself to sleep after Omeprazole. Gaviscon made him severely constipated so have taken him off it. He has been on Nutramigen 1 for 7 weeks, but this only came about after multiple gp and A&E visits, often to be told that he is "thriving" whilst screaming the whole ward down in pain. I'm fed up of being told it's colic and "some babies just cry more than others and all you can do is give them a cuddle" or "have you tried going to a baby group?" How will going to a baby group stop my baby screaming in pain everyday?

Unfortunately I cannot offer any magical solutions or advice, but I hope it helps to know that you are not alone in this - sadly. 😘 xxx

Avatar

thank you. Yes 999 was our first visit up and kept in for 2 nights. Sorry your going through all of this. If you look up a BRUE event it will explain it better than I will lol. Xx

Avatar

I feel for you hun. Sometimes they are no use at all. Thank you for messaging. It’s nice to know I’m not alone for sure xx

Avatar

Reflux is a symptom of something. Have you seen if there is a possible tongue tie? Also seizure like symptoms with reflux sounds like sandifer syndrome

Avatar

yes he’s been checked for tongue tie. Ok I’ll look that up thanks

Do men really enjoy fellatio?

Been together more than 10 years, but it's been a while since he even seemed remotely interested in me getting on my knees, or vice versa so to speak. I think it was once last year. Must be something I am doing wrong 🤔. Generally everything else in that department is great and we have two young kids with no extra support, so it's quite surprising we can't keep our hands off each other but may need to try new things. It's basically 2 positions each time with some foreplay.

I think Motherhood has made me more bitter than I realized…

This is such a ramble but I don’t know where else to put it all.

I’m four months in and I don’t really have hobbies right now. I don’t do anything for myself except maybe doomscrolling or listening to a podcast while I breastfeed my baby. I used to craft and have game nights with friends. Activities that usually are at least 2 hour stretches. Now if I have an hour free my mind immediately goes to baby, or doing something in the house for baby.

And I thought I didn’t mind. Like I knew postpartum could be very mentally consuming. But I think it’s altering how I view people around me and it’s prodding at my relationship with my husband.

He spends most of his time making food for us, looking after our dogs, playing with the baby, ect. But he still has time for his hobby. Spends maybe an hour a night on it. Even adapted to using a bot for shopping for his hobby after a certain incident where we had to have a heart to heart after he left me home alone with the baby for hours during a busy workday (I work from home) to shop for his hobby.

And yet there’s like this little green eyed monster in me that rages every time I know he’s running off to start up the bot. Even though I’m the reason he does it this way.

We took a family trip last weekend to see his best friend and their kids and let them meet the baby. He brought the laptop. He’s always brought a laptop on trips and it’s never been a problem to me before. But one night we both woke up while the baby was still asleep, and he wandered out of the room. I tried to fall back asleep but couldn’t. So I went to the kitchen to try having something warm to drink to settle me. And he was there at the table running the bot from his laptop. I flipped out at him. But there really wasn’t reason to. It’s not like I needed help with the baby and he was ignoring me. He wasn’t avoiding our friends. He was just awake and unable to sleep and found something to do with his time. Yet my snap reaction was “why the hell would you do this on a family trip?”

I don’t know what it is. Maybe it’s the less complete sleep from baby’s middle of the night feed? My brain being just consumed by baby? Maybe I’m not as over that shopping incident as I thought? But I’m just so annoyed at his hobby right now. The green eyed monster thinks “you could be using that time differently” but realistically to do what exactly??? Stare at our baby in the dark???

I spent probably an hour apologizing to him after I snapped. And he’s of course hurt and frustrated because I said some very mean things in the moment.

I don’t want to be this jealous, angry person. But I also don’t know how to find time for myself in this right now outside of basic hygiene. It’s like I’ve forgotten how to be myself, even if just for an hour.

Maybe I need a therapist.

Vaccination advice

I’m really looking for advice and opinions on vaccines for my baby. I’m not against getting them but also just don’t feel like I know enough about them to make a decision just yet as I’ve had people say to me they don’t agree with them and they can cause issues etc… so I just want as much info as possible. What are everyone’s thoughts and experiences of vaccinating your child? I’m just interested to see everybody’s views (no judgement as I just want to know I’m doing the right thing) thank you x
