Colostrum harvesting guilt

Due tomorrow and I’ve only managed to collect 0.1-0.2ml of colostrum. Is anyone else in the same boat with little/no colostrum stocked up in the freezer by now😳
Planning to BF/combi feed but I know colostrum doesn’t stick around for long & it’s so good to have a stash for when baby is unwell etc.

Just feeling really bad about it and disheartened with the failed attempts

I haven’t managed to get any. The midwife made me feel really bad about it the other day but have just had no luck with it at all. A lot of friends who have had babies didn’t manage either and their babies are all fine xxx

i dont know why midwives are making anyone feel bad or making this a thing! i had my last baby 4 years ago and this was not a thing, nor is it important so you dont need to feel guilty, your baby will get the colostrum the day baby is born when you put them on the boob, and theyll get a good 2/3 days of it for the first little bit, please dont beat yourself up girls, i have successfully breastfed my kids and i have never ever harvested colostrum, youre growing the baby perfectly which is more than enough and breastfeeding will support that even more, so please dont give yourselves a hard time 🩷

I attempted to collect it, and it hurt. So decided I'd not bother. It's not a must. My sister collected for three weeks took them all to the hospital and forgot them 😂... So don't stress yourself on it

yes this!! and also the hospital sometimes dont even let you take it because of storage issues and it all gets wasted! x

When did this become such a thing? No midwife has even suggested it to me. When I mentioned it at the hospital we talked about how it was a trend and not always necessary!

Don’t worry about it just get baby to the breast straight away lots of skin to skin and in between feeds you may be able to express a little then if not then rest assured that your baby will get what they need straight from there breast.

sorry to hear your MW made you feel bad :( I haven’t had this but it seems like everywhere I look people are talking about how much colostrum they’ve stored up so I’ve just been feeling a lot of pressure. That’s really good to know though thank you xx

@I really needed to hear this, thank you for sharing❤️ xx

nightmare!! I would be so gutted. I suppose it’s not guaranteed to work out perfectly either way x

honestly youve got this, this whole colostrum feeding thing has gone a bit ott! i been doing this having babies mum thing for 12 years and ive never heard of it, and how its being made such a thing and people are feeling awful because of it is horrendous, youre doing a great job x

Avatar

that’s really reassuring to hear. I thought it was only important in certain situations, then all of a sudden I’ve started to read about it/see it everywhere like it’s the norm now

Avatar

thank you, this has made me feel better. I will try this x

Avatar

thanks so much, means a lot for me to hear this as a FTM xx

if you need anything let me know x

With my first I collected colostrum and forgot them at home but still managed to breastfeed successfully after a c-section. It won't define your feeding journey!

thank you❤️

I also found that this time round I got way more from using the hakkaa rather than hand expressing or using a pump.

When do things get easier?

As we entered the 9-12 month stage, my son started crawling and pulling himself up. He also became more clingy and does not play alone, still doesnt sleep through the night, and this week has been sick (so EVERYTHING amplified). I am tired and overwhelmed. Please lie and tell me things get better. 🥺

Colostrum storing?

Has anyone successfully extracted colostrum before the baby’s born? Apparently it gets produced from 16w pregnant and you can start storing it in the freezer but I’m 34w looking at my nipples and the syringes on amazon wondering how it works?? Like what did you use and did it hurt? 🥲

Self settling

Any tips or advice of how to teach 6.5month old to self settle? I’m up multiple times in the night to cuddle her back to sleep and put the dummy in. I understand she will wake up and want a cuddle etc but any tips on self settling would be appreciated 🥰

Baby losing weight

Hi all, it's been a long time since I had a baby (my son is 15!). My daughter is 10 days old and was 9lb born, she has since lost weight at every appointment and is at a 12% loss. I am breast feeding every two hours for over an hour and topping her up every feed. I pump and can get 60ml in 10 minutes so I know my supply is okay. Anyone had this before? Can give me some tips? I currently feel like I'm letting my baby down.

How many words

Just a quick gauge of how many words your little ones are saying at this age. I heard by 15 months it should be 5 words, are most around this mark ?
