Hi there,
Can anyone in Aberdeen shed some light on this? My baby is currently still small but I’m trying to plan ahead for childcare. When she’s 3, I understand she’ll be entitled to 15 free hours a week. My health visitor, however, told me that school nurseries are free? So how does that work if I want her to go full time? I think the health visitor must have this wrong - surely you pay for whatever the amount is minus the 15 free hours?

Hiya so I think across all of the UK everyone is entitled to 30 free hours of childcare per week regardless of your income (when the child is 3). The school nurseries are run by the local authority and I think only accept kids when they get to age 3. They operate during school hours so I think this equates to 30 hours per week and that’s why it’s free. My son is only 18 months but he needs 52 hours per week of childcare so he goes to a private nursery because of his age and hours we need. When he gets his free hours he will still need to go there because school nurseries don’t suit my working hours and I need the care 50 weeks of the year. If you use a school nursery they close during school holidays so your free hours will always work out at 30 a week but if you choose private nursery you can get less free weekly hours but stretch them out over the course of the year xx

The 15 free hours that are for working people when their child is age 2 is only in England. Scotland haven’t announced any plans to roll it out yet x
