Silicone = soap taste

I’ve seen so many people talk about the silicone baby/toddler plates making food taste like soap. Does anyone have experience with this and can tell me if it’s true or not. I’m looking to get some plates to get serious about BLW with my daughter (nearly 7 months). I want suction ones to cut down some of the mess (I do know it’s basically a loosing battle but she is a thrower already). Should I just invest in the bamboo ones or will the silicone ones be fine with proper care? TIA

I’ve never heard this and none of the silicone plates/spoons/cups we have make anything taste like soap. I use both the dishwasher or hand wash too and haven’t had any issues. Maybe it’s the kind of soap people are using?

I love the EZPZ plate because it sticks really well to the high chair and is hard to flip off.

I've used the Nuk plates, zero issues.
Oh, except they only suction when you don't need them to. But whatever, no soap issues anyway.

I've never experienced this.

I was using dawn dish soap to wash my babies comotomo bottles and noticed the scent you’re describing and I hated that I would then put that in my babies mouth like I was feeding her soap, I changed my dish soap to seventh generation fragrance free and that fixed that problem!

If you wash them by hand or put in top rack of dishwasher then it shouldn’t happen.

So for this try to use not water and end it with cold water and if that doesn’t work just stick it in the oven to clean remove the smell and taste.

Yeah it's true. All of our silicone plates, straws, plastic bottles etc, smell and taste of soap. Always been on the top rack of the dishwasher. We have to bake it in the oven but wish I hadn't bought them. She still likes to eat off the high chair tray anyway

Dont use fragrant dish soaps. Try to use more natural or even home made soap!

Avatar

Yeah I’ve washed ours by hand and noticed this our boy has quickly learned to use one of our bowls/plates which I prefer as I worry about plastics and hot food and the plastic leaching /microplasic particles etc, we all need less plastic in our systems!

It’s the type of dish soap/dishwasher soap you’re using on the silicone. Try using a soap that’s more mild 🫶🏼 I find that the dishwashing capsules do leave a soapy taste so I started washing by hand and no longer have the issue.

We use silicone for plates, cups and cutlery. Never had a soap taste or smell.

If you have a very strong fragrant smelling soap/dishwasher soap I can see why this happens to some and not to others. If yours is currently very fragrant and you wanna make sure it doesn’t make the silicone smell soapy maybe choose another brand with a much milder scent 🙃 Usually the more eco brands are more milder in scent in general as they use essential oils for their fragrance

Avatar

tried that - no difference. The scentless ones could make a difference but they're ridiculously expensive 🤷 cheaper to just get ceramic or stainless steel baby plates

Avatar

are you using a lot? Many of the comments above have never had issues with silicone smelling, neither have I. I have heaps of silicone baking stuff too and no soapy smell. But I’m very sensitive to strong smelling detergents so even my clothes detergent is very mild. Maybe give them a boil in hot water for 5mins and see if it helps any 💁🏻‍♀️

I did use and wash them every day before I changed the plates yup, whenever I fed her she had the plates. Had to bake everything in the oven for an hour. Then the whole house smelled horribly of soap! Which mild dishwasher tablets do you use?

Avatar

Earth Choice powder. Same brand for liquid

thanks, maybe powder is the way to go, we are using those 4 in 1 tablets with the extra liquid and Powerball on

Baby clothes

Just out of curiosity, why do parents love zipper onesies?

Don’t get me wrong, I tried zipper ones it’s easy to zip in and out when putting it on the first time and taking it out, but I find it difficult when changing diapers especially when baby is asleep.

I prefer those kimono style buttons where it’s easy to button or too down button with crotch snaps.

Is everyone thinking the same or different? Lol

Dummy

My baby has had a dummy since about 2 weeks old (now 5 months) and over the course of the last month we weaned her off it during the day only for naps and night (which was fine) and then 5 days took it completely away during the day.

The first day no dummy was fine, the second bit rougher. But now it feels impossible she just moans and cries all the time it takes ages for her to go down to sleep (she’s always been an amazing sleeper)

I thought it was meant to get better as time went on not worse. I’m at my wits end I dunno what to do.

Currently typing this as she screams uncontrollably in the car and I cry with her cos I can’t do anything.

Of these two, which seems more overall “demanding” to you, overall? Lighthearted poll, not putting anyone down 🫶🏼

As a mum who breastfed for 3 years, I think formula feeding seems 100x harder and more demanding. I give those mamas all the credit because I could not keep up with that faff haha. I truly don’t understand why people say breastfeeding is more effort, other than the fact that no one else can do it. But personally I’d take that over endless bottle prep & cleaning.

Is this normal?

My 12m old is really funny with kids going near him, he’s always been this way, but anytime family’s kids sit next to him or head his way he moans or cries and moves away. He also really observes them and is never really relaxed, always looking over his shoulder. Has anyone experienced this? (He’s starting nursery properly tomorrow so hoping this helps) but is this normal?

8 week immunisations

My 8 week old has his first set of injections tomorrow and I’m abit nervous. Does anyone have any advice for after the jabs? I know they get a temp after so have got some calpol to give just before hand. Should I put him to bed in less clothing to make sure he doesn’t get too hot? Any tips from your experience with first set of immunisations? Am I worrying more than I need to? 😅
