Currently, I sit beside him, singing and patting whilst he falls asleep. Then I leave. This is the case for nap and bedtime but he wakes multiple times in the night unable to settle and needing someone next to him to fall back to sleep.
How can I get him to do this independently? I dont mind a few wakes in the night but every 2 hours is just crazy at the mo!

Can you stop patting and just touch, then try to stop the touching? Does he have any toys he cuddles?

Try and do it in small steps, maybe see if he'll go to sleep with you not singing* and just patting, then slow down the patting lots so as if to wean him off, then try just have your hand on touching him, then sitting next to him without touching him. I had to do it in small steps like this with my son, we used to gently rock him in the bed and so I had to slow that down and then move on from rocking to just touch and then sitting next to
*see if there's some lullabies he'd be happy listening to as well so you can keep these playing as you leave the room
