Breast Feeding

It's really up to you. My first goal i set for myself was to just try to establish it, and then i extended that to 6 months, then noticed how quickly she would recover from getting sick and so I extended the 6 months to now through February (get through the peak of RSV and Flu season). I have also been able to set aside enough to get her through a year of breast milk. It'll be difficult to stop the breastfeeding as I love that time of ours in the morning, but at the same time I know it'll be one less stressor that's always on my mind. If you're able to go beyond 1 year and you don't give a rats ass what people may think about it I say have at it!

18 months is my max. I love her dearly, but I would like my body to be mine again. I will probably end BFing right through the end of cold/flu season next year and end our journey there. My stepdaughter was BFed until she was 3, and her mom shut it down for multiple reasons.

This is what the American Academy of Pediatrics AAP recommends: “Updated AAP guidance continues to recommend exclusive breastfeeding for six months, with complementary foods introduced around six months. Under the new policy, the AAP now supports continued breastfeeding until two years or beyond, as mutually desired by mother and child.”

I feel like going to 2 years is long but so hard to predict how I’ll be feeling. Breastfeeding has been wonderful but extremely hard for me. I’ve had to cut dairy, soy, and eggs out of my diet which limits me so much as soy is in so many things. Each month I count it as a huge success so just seeing how long both he and I will be able to go. Hoping for a year!

In terms of stigma… who cares! It’s your baby! You do what you think is best using informed decision making. I know stigma can make the breastfeeding journey harder though but just know that going beyond a year is perfectly normal!

i plan to nurse however long my baby wants . ive been freezing milk so that if she decides to stop before shes a year old she will have enough to last another 6ish months. shes almost 7 months now and she using nursing as a comfort so i dont see her stopping anytime soon. but its all up to you and how you feel. i originally was only going to nurse for 6 months and now i love that bond and comfort nusing gives her so ive extended it.

I pray that we at least make it to a year. I would be happy continuing past the year mark though. Just depends on how long my daughter chooses to go.
