Growth scan question!

Hey everyone, seeking reassurance! i went for a growth scan today as bump was measuring a little on the small side, however the sonographer has now told me that baby is rather large and was quite rude to me about it! I have come away feeling really anxious about baby and it’s size! I haven’t had any birthing anxiety until today but now that I’ve been quite bluntly told my baby is big for 33 weeks and has a very large tummy… I don’t know how to feel! I am 33 weeks exactly today and sonographer would not tell me the centiles, only that baby is sitting at around 5lbs… I’m not really sure what a normal weight for this gestation is! If anyone has any idea that would be great 🥰 advice very much needed!

Was it a private scan or at your normal hospital?

Put a complaint in about sonographer and contact you midwife and explain what happened. She should be able to look at results and fill you in on everything you have questions about.

Honestly growth scans are known to not be accurate , take what they say lightly

They said the same thing to me! I had my last scan at 34 weeks and she was measuring right around 5 pounds and my doctor said I was going to have a bigger than average baby and I was scareddddd but she came out at 7 pounds 9 ounces. I had an emergency c section though because her heart beat kept dropping so I didn’t have to push her out lol.

it was at the normal hospital today!

Oh wow! Then yeah definitely put a complaint! Sorry this happened!

You’re entitled to have the notes/report from the scan, the percentiles will be there etc - I would call back and complain. Also, the AC (tummy) measurement is sometimes high on small babies too, so this sonographer you dealt with is not only rude but also incompetent! I’m sorry you had such a shit experience. xx

Avatar

I have already messaged the midwife to ask, I’m not sure about everyone else but my notes are all online and I am unable to access anything! It’s useless! She was so grumpy, we were 3 minutes late because of traffic and she didn’t introduce herself, asked me what I’ve been eating and if I have been told I need a gestational diabetes test which I haven’t been! I’m all in a panic now 😂

Put in a complaint to Pals if your not happy with how your was treated.. also try not don’t worry about what she said. Your baby is healthy and that’s all that matters,, they can’t tell you accurately your baby is big until their arrival x

I would complain. How unprofessional. Also the NHS admit scans can be off by 15%. Take a note of their name, and next time you have a scan appointment - ring the hospital and ask who it's with. If it's them, request someone new.

Avatar

I have been told this! She was just so rude and wouldn’t explain anything to me so I was worried! Thank you for reassuring me 🥰

Avatar

amazing! 7lb 9 would be great 😂 I hope you’re recovering well 🥰

Avatar

that’s really interesting to know! I will bare that in mind and see if my community midwife can help and give me a copy of the results! I’ve had such a lovely experience in pregnancy so far, so I’m a bit gutted that at 33 weeks I’ve had this happen to worry me! We shall wait and see what baby weighs at the end of Feb! Hopefully it’s not late 😂xx

Avatar

thank you, I am really glad baby is happy and healthy in there, that’s the only good thing about having the scan! I will send a little email to pals 🥰 xx

Avatar

I didn’t know this! That’s really helpful for me to know, thank you! Yes I will 100% be asking for a different sonographer next time if I need to go again, she was so rude! X

I went growth scan last week at 34 weeks and baby was measuring at 5lb 7oz so your baby seems to be in the right range try not to worry, they said our baby tummy is abit big but still In normal range xxx

Avatar

The exact same thing happened to me regarding growth. I'm 35+1 and my baby is already measuring 7lbs1 🤣
I think my midwife booked me in for a GD test and it came back normal, just a large baby. Ask your midwife if they're going to book you in for this test.
On that day, I went in to work and just cried because it all felt overwhelming, which I think is normal. You go from calm, no issues, nothing to worry about to : possibly a big baby, possibly needing earlier delivery, possibly by different methods you'd not considered etc...
I would suggest reading up about different types of birth. Pros and Cons. And also reminding yourself that these things can be inaccurate

Avatar

Yes absolutely! I also have all my notes on an online app but I can access all scan reports, blood test results etc… You should be able to do the same! See what she says. 😊 xx

Growth scan giving at 34 weeks and baby apparently 7lbs. We had a very rude sonographer as well who didn't read my file first and assumed I had diabetes etc. I had to tell her multiple times I didn't, and kept insinuating that I mustn't be exercising or moving alot which I then had to tell her I still go to the gym 5 days a week.... she seemed shocked. Im back again at 36 weeks for another scan (currently head and stomach are over 99th percentile) but I'm taking all that the say lightly. These scans are so inaccurate

Avatar

They will likely test for gestational diabetes test as babies belly is measuring larger and this is a sign.
I wouldn’t panic, babies can be bigger/ smaller for no reason and growth scans are estimated not always accurate.
They are not trained or allowed to explain to you they are trained to scan , do you have a consultant appointment as this is usually after the scan to discuss with you.

That being said she still shouldn’t of been rude and made you feel this way 🤍

Due to a chromosome translocation I carry I had a growth scan at 28weeks and the consultant that did it was really rude. Said my baby was really big, had I had GD testing (I'd literally had it 3 days prior and it came back fine), said I should seriously consider a C-section as the baby will be too big to push out and had I not taken any advice about what to eat etc during my pregnancy. I informed him I had actually lost weight during the pregnancy and that I'd had two GD tests that were both fine and all of a sudden he was like oh you are doing great there's nothing more you could have done to change it it's not something you can control 🤷🏼‍♀️. My two growth scans since and baby is now no longer 'off the scale' and the last one the consultant has said there is no reason to suggest I need a C-section as the tummy is still large but it's all 'closest estimation'.
Please try not to worry which is much easier said than done as I spent 8 weeks worrying I would need a C-section and actually it turns out that's

Not the case at all. Speak with your midwife and see what she thinks but don't let it dictate these remaining weeks of your pregnancy ❤️. Sometimes they forget how to talk to us and that we are going through one of the biggest changes in our lives xxx

Avatar

this was really helpful to hear! Im sorry you had to go through that. I think my pregnancy hormones are getting the better of me today, as I’ve taken this really hard! Hopefully baby is just healthy and happy and we will get to the due date with no need for any further growth scans! I also haven’t even triggered for the GD test and when I spoke with the midwife she said she has no concerns if anything my bump is small. It’s all a waiting game now! 7 weeks and counting until we meet little one ❤️ thank you again x

Avatar

Glad you are feeling better ❤️. Good luck with the rest of the pregnancy, not long now and bubba will be here xx

Scan needed at 33 weeks

Hi ladies! I just had a midwife appointment (I am 33+5)..the midwife was different to my usual midwife. She's requested I have a scan within 72 hours as she said baby is measuring a little small, however, she did say that it's likely nothing to worry about and it's probably just her measuring me a bit different to my usual midwife. Has anyone else had this? Am a bit worried although babys heartbeat and movements are completely fine.

Finding out gender

Has anyone found out the gender at a private scan at 14 weeks? And has this been accurate?

I found out at 17 with my first but I know a scan place that offers from 14/15 weeks and I’m impatient 😂🥲

Anyone been induced before? Was it more painful? Better than thought? Worse than thought? Worth it? Thoughts?
