Baby growth

Just had my 28 week midwife appointment (currently 29+1) and I was surprised when the midwife said they don’t measure baby at all after the 20 week scan - so I won’t be measured or have any kind of knowledge on the baby’s size until my 36 week scan?! Is this normal? She said not everywhere offers a 36 week scan (which I knew) and this is one to determine baby’s size etc but that seems like quite a bit gap to not be measuring at all at appointments? I have had a couple of private scans since my 20 week scan and baby is measuring alll good/on the right trajectory but I just wondered if I didn’t have those, how would they know if there was a problem and baby was actually starting to measure really big/small?! 🤯

Ever since my 20 week scan, at every midwife appointment they have measured baby. I had my 31 week appointment yesterday and they measured baby again so I’m unsure why they aren’t🤷🏼‍♀️

At my 28 week appt, they measured my bump and she said we'll be doing this every appt until he's here. The if needed refer off to a growth scan

Ever since my 28w appointment my midwife measures me ( I have appointments every 2-3 weeks now) but I'm not sure if that's cause I'm high risk or not. I have a growth scan next week as I'm measuring 5 weeks ahead and they are concerned how big the bump is.

They will measure ur bump and determine that way, if bump is too big/small they will send you for growth scans to look into it.

The only reason I’m not getting measure by the MW is because I’ve got GD and regular growth scans booked in else she would have measured me x

The problem is at midwife appointments they will only measure your bump and that is not an accurate account of how big your baby is it could just be waters etc. if you are at risk of baby being over or underweight due to medical issues they will send you for growth scans. I have these growth scans at 28wks,32wks, 36 wks and 38wks, this scan takes measurements of baby, however, even this isn’t 100% accurate. If they are worried or you are showing any signs or symptoms of concern they will get you checked out and you know your body call the midwife if you have any concerns at all. I honestly was dreading the 28wk scan I just had as I have really popped over the past month I feel huge so convinced I was having a massive baby but she’s measuring average for everything xxx

no they’re not measuring my bump at all

thank you for that explanation !! V helpful 🥰 just going with all is ok with baby until told otherwise or I feel any different !!

I do find it odd that they aren’t doing that, are you UK based of US?

Avatar

I haven’t had mine measured but that because I’m have growth scans, xx

UK based- London!!

I would maybe ask at your next appt why you aren’t getting measured, it’s important to know if he’s following as expected or not all, as others have said theirs is replaced with growth scans but if you aren’t receiving either I’d defiantly ask x

Avatar

yeah I did today and she said the 36 week growth scan has replaced any growth measurements due to their inaccuracies. I think it’s all fine I guess, I was just surprised and not totally convinced they’d know anything was wrong when they’re not checking!! All my measurements at 20 weeks were average and we’ve had a couple of private scans which shows baby is growing nicely but it just surprised me that’s all:) xx

Bham- scans at 12 and 20 weeks and that’s it if low risk. I did have one at 31 weeks due to reduced movement. They should measure your fundal height (belly) at each midwife appt but tbh it not very good in my opinion as it’s subjective depending on when you say where your pelvic bone starts

Avatar

I am classed as low risk and my midwife started measuring me from 28w and sees me every 2-3 weeks. This is just a measurement of the bump and I haven't been offered any scans, last one was at 20w. X

Pregnant with baby 2

Hi everyone! I gave birth via emergency c section 9 months ago as my baby boy was measuring big, he pooped inside so there was risk of him inhaling it and I wasn’t progressing past 3cm to have a natural birth and now I’m currently 20 weeks pregnant with my 2nd baby. I’m having a consultation on Tuesday to talk about birth options and to have any questions answered but I don’t know what to ask. I feel like it would be safer having a c section again but at the same time I don’t want a c section. Does anyone have any question ideas I could ask or any advice/stories of similar situations. Tia

Anyone else felt like this?

Hi, I’m 4 months postpartum, little one sleeps through the night and is formula fed, the last week I’ve felt extremely tired and very hungry! Just wondered if anyone else has felt this way/experienced this?

Hey what are your current symptoms?

I’m 37+5

I’m pretty mobile still but anything over a hour or 2 and I’m in discomfort

Getting up from a sitting position is hard

Some of baby’s movements now are bordering on painful especially around my crotch/pelvis

I’m exhausted very easily and nap every single day

Can basically only breathe out my mouth now and I’m snoring and dribbling 😂

Standing in one leg is very painful 😂

Some waves of pain/ tightening but I regular and mild

Low period type aches

And I feel like a fire breathing dragon with this acid reflux

My nose is growing 😂

My fingers swell slightly and go numbs in my sleep so that and constant toilet breaks keep me up ( checked swelling with MW and consultant and all normal, not a worry)

I also do not want to be social in person like I’d rather everyone just be my penpal atm lol

What are your symptoms?
