Hi mummas!
When did everyone move their toddlers from their cot to a toddler bed or mattress on the floor? When did you feel the time was right and how did you ensure your toddler actually went to bed and didn’t just climb out and play?
My boy will be 2 in March and he is trying to climb out of his cot… I’m worried he will be successful and will hurt himself. Nervous to move him to a toddler bed as he might just play or try get out him room.
Appreciate the advice x

We took the side of the cot off when our daughter started the effort of climbing out. Her room is pretty boring, no toys in there just a few books so she never gets up to play. We stay with her till she is asleep and she either sleeps through or calls for me during the night for a cuddle. Never had an issue with her not staying in it. But that was my fear in the beginning as well. I was surprised how well the transition went.

17 months…. She climbed out. We spent a week sleeping in her room and then started transitioning to only staying till she was asleep. We did have a period after she turned 2 when she had night terrors, and we’d have to take her back and stay the rest of the night. Now she’ll sneak into our bed if she wakes up and it’s still dark out.

Moved my daughter to a bed when she was 2, she sleeps in a king single bed with some cylindrical cushions shoved under the sheet to stop her from rolling… I lie in bed beside her until she falls asleep (that’s why we went for a king single!) and because she sleeps in a sleeping bag still, she hasn’t ever tried to jump out of bed in the morning or overnight - she just sits up and calls for us. It has been SO much easier getting her to sleep in the bed than in the cot, she was super excited about it on night 1 and it also gives us a bit more space to lounge about in her room reading etc.

15months, no issue for us even though he's a tornado normally

My daughter moved into a king single bed when she was 15months old, we kept to our routine and she didn't have any issue.

Hi Michelle. We moved our daughter to a floorbed after she turned 2. Sleeping arrangements prior were a combination of bed sharing and cot sleep. She did well with the transition. I found it far easier to put her back to bed or welcome her into our bed with a floorbed compared to a cot, and everyone’s sleep improved after that point! She’s now 3 and a 1/4 and using a king single toddler bed. There have never been toys in her bedroom so she associates that space with sleep, but I’ve found she’s never gone to her playroom in the night anyway. Once she’s in bed, we keep the house lights dim or off to create nighttime atmosphere.
I think it’s inevitable that the kiddos will get out of bed and wonder, even come to your room, but that’s part of the transition. It may take a bit of extra work with the adjustment. Depending on the room set up, safety measures may be needed eg securing wardrobes/ bookshelves. If toys are present, consider moving them out. Good luck ☺️

We moved our daughter into a toddler bed a couple of weeks ago (she’ll be 2 in April) because she was climbing out of her cot. It’s taken a couple of weeks to get her used to the change but we just lie down next to her until she falls asleep and make sure the door is open so she can find us if she wakes up during the night. We’ve kept the baby monitor in her room for the time being so we can keep an eye on her to make sure she stays in bed too. I’d say as long as you stick to a routine it’s not too exhausting a process 😊
