I’ve read between 4-6 months, when they aren’t fussy anymore or when they don’t burp while trying to burp them.

She started burping by herself if she needed to and that’s when I stopped. I can’t really remember when that was, before 4 mos though

My little boy is 6 1/2 months and after a feed I still sit him up straight but he will burp on his own, I no longer need to pat him
I still try to sit her straight up. But she doesn’t always burp by herself.

I think my son was around 5 months when he started to burp by himself.

They say the most accurate time is when a baby can sit up on their own and hold themselves up because that’s when their airway is completely opened on their own for them to make the motions and movements for them to get it out on their own because that’s when they’re starting to physically use their own stomach muscles. Hope that helps
