Hi,
I’m breastfeeding our 2 week old baby boy and due to my epilepsy, we give him a formula bottle (after I’ve fed him) if he needs a feed at 12-1am so I can sleep more and my partner feeds baby.
I’m still doing morning feeds if he wakes up from 3am onwards.
We often have 2-3oz of milk left after evening feed and it seems such a shame to always chucking it away.
How long do you keep formula milk and use it after it’s been made? It’s such a waste to keep throwing it away.
He usually leaves between 0-3ozs so we have made less on several occasions but then we’ve needed more 🤦🏻♀️
Thanks ☺️

I want to say 2 hours but I may be wrong as EBF and only given ready made formula 2 times when she wasn’t well and I couldn’t keep up with demand

If your child has drank out of the bottle it needs disposed of after 1 hour. Same rule applies to breast milk in a bottle.
I think formula might only be allowed to stay at room temperature for up to 2 hours. Breast milk can sit at room temperature for up to 4 hours. So I would consider expressing so you have longer expiration at room temperature.

Are you using a prep machine, is that why you are making up a bigger bottle than needed? It only needs thrown away if baby has drank from it. If its untouched its good in the fridge for 24 hours. So you could make a 6oz bottle, and pour 3oz into another bottle and pop into the fridge

1 hour

I’ve been playing with having a stock solution bottle for formula and a feeding bottle (clean both between each feed) so I can keep the stock in the fridge and only put what she needs in the feeding bottle. I’ll start with 2oz, then add 0.5oz increments

We also use premade formula so it may be a little more forgiving and lets us refrigerate it if it hasn’t touched anything for up to 48 hours

As others have said it is only good for 1 hour once baby has drunk from the bottle, 2 hours at room temp if the bottle is untouched.
Could you make the bottle and then split it in 2 straight away so the second half won’t be wasted if not used, but is also there if you need it?

Thanks all. We’ll just dispose of what’s left over and I’ll express more often. For the evening bottle.
My son has a tongue tie which isn’t able to be snipped yet and I’m so sore on both breasts today so I’m expressing what I can this evening.
Thanks again 😌

have you tried using a haaka pump? It collects letdown whilst you’re breastfeeding and I’ve found I can get another ounce at least from it
