I’m currently 1 week PP and have been breastfeeding plus collecting let down so my partner can bottle feed once a day. I’m still having latching issues despite multiple midwife hands on demos where I think I’ve finally got it… then 2 feeds later I’m back to square 1. Getting super frustrated with myself as it’s not a complex instruction (c shape around areola, hands on back of baby’s neck & bring him to breast). My nipples are super tender and sometimes blister/bleed a little, determined to persevere. Silver cups worked pre milk coming in, however I now need the collection cups on constantly for leakage.
What are peoples timescales for a) nailing a good latch b) breastfeeding not being painful c) breastfeeding becoming second nature?
Any/all advice appreciated!

I am 6 weeks PP with my first. The first 2 weeks of breast feeding were honestly horrific. It was incredibly painful and we couldn't get a good latch no matter what we tried. Turns out my son needed to learn how to feed just like I did and I was doing everything right. After 2 weeks the pain went away and I'd say now we are finally starting to get into the groove of breastfeeding. It's hard and I wanted to give up but it gets better every day. Some days it will feel like you're back at the start but push through it, tomorrow is a new day. You got this Mumma!

I think you will get there in the end. The one thing I learnt from a breastfeeding class was to support baby’s neck but focus more on bottom of neck and shoulders so baby’s head tilts back a bit x

thanks so much, think I really needed to read that! ❤️

Has your baby been checked for a tongue tie at all?

yes anatomically all fine and when midwife is there hands on the latch is great 🙃 xx

I have fed two babies and found this method painful every since time. I took the Dr Thomson Method course and am now nearly 3 years into feeding! It’s all about gentle positioning and allowing baby to learn to latch by themselves. You don’t want your nipple to be touching the roof of babies mouth as that will really hurt, nipple to breast symmetry is the thing to focus on rather than just getting them to latch c

thanks Sofie, I shall give this a go as well! Will have a look into the dr Thompson method, it’s nothing so thing I’ve come across so thank you!

I found my nursing pillow really helped. Baby really didn’t like her neck/head being forced towards breast, on the nursing pillow she was fully supported and had some control.

Hey you're not the only one ! It sounds super simple I agree!! My daughter struggles to latch too despite me following the same instructions, I think she hates having her head forced into a position and then she'll eventually latch on but it'll be shallow and sooo painful and then get super frustrated when the flow slows down.
I've tried different positions, feeding before she's starving when she's calmer, but Any other tips from other Mums would be super helpful
