Hey, sorry in advance, this is a long complicated situation.
I am on a temporary teaching contract, only started at the school in September and I'm expecting my first baby end of June. I've been worrying about my contract being renewed all year, and affording baby anyway as I think I only qualify for SMP... but now I've also been put under investigation so my job is even more vulnerable.
My question is, am I assuming right?
Also, if I am no longer working at the school, will the trust still be the ones who pay my SMP, if not who?
Finally, I am meant to be submitting my maternity leave plans by 9th March (midwife and get MATB1 form on 8th) and I was planning on putting that I'd start leave on 9th June and return after the 39 weeks pay ends (March 2025), dependant on my contract renewal. However, I don't know what to do now with this going on??
Hellllp please. Thank you!

Hey! I was in a similar situation to you last year, only being on a 1 year contract.
When I went off on maternity, I had been there less than a year, so I only qualify for SMP. This is paid for by the school.
My role was fairly specific to the school (reading recovery), and back in April, I had to "apply" for my own role as the school was going from 3 of us to just 1. I wasn't successful, and my contract ran out in December - while I've been on maternity leave.
I think you need to speak to the head to see what is going to happen with your contract. Legally, they can not hold being pregnant against you and should extend the contract if the job is still one that is required.
Hope this helps!!xx

If you’re unemployed you won’t be eligible for SMP, but you’d probably be eligible for Universal Credit (depending on any savings and partner’s income, if applicable)
If you’re under investigation definitely get your union on side and keep them as involved as possible.

@Sophie I'm technically unemployed but am still receiving SMP from my employer even though my contract ended in Dec. You're entitled to it for the 39 weeks.

ah yes, I guess it depends when the contract is due to end

If you have been continuously employed by someone, you might be entitled to Maternity Allowance instead of SMP.
I changed jobs in September and had my baby in January, so didn’t qualify for SMP but did get MA.
It’s the same rate as SMP and you can apply by downloading a form on the government website and posting it off!
