Possible to come home same day after c section?

Think youre going to be looking at 1 night at least for a c-section

Think it will depend on your time of birth but usually they keep you in a night. I was waiting on hearing if I needed a blood transfusion so didn’t hear back until like 2am so I just stayed the night rather than leave at that time x

Before I had one I hoped I'd be out asap. However after I had one I honestly didn't feel ready to leave hospital until night 4. I was in so much pain before then and couldn't move properly and no way could I have left and taken care of a baby. By day 4 though I was desperate to get home due to lack of sleep 🙈 I wouldn't rush it until you can go to toilet etc properly and can control the pain with meds. Everyone different though so may be faster healing than me!

I think some hospitals wants 48 hours. I had my C-section at 1am Thursday and was discharged Saturday afternoon

It’s 24h. You need to be observed after any major surgery for complications like clots or infection.

You also won’t be walking or even standing for 12 hours normally. The spinal tap needs to wear off.

Honestly though, time flies by and it’s actually quite nice to be helped with learning to feed and just relaxing x

Thanks everyone, I thought it would be the case. I had an emergency section before and although it was fine and I recovered really well, I was looked after terribly on the ward after. Would of been better off at home with my partner caring for me but of course understand I need to stay in case any thing happens. Hope my aftercare is better this time ☹️

@incog have you considered another trust for better care? xx

I haven’t actually, my last section was Sept 2021 when covid was still to blame for everything including minimum staff levels and standard of care so I’m sort of just hoping it’ll be better this time. A different trust is something I might consider though, thank you x

I gave birth at 11:11 pm so stayed that night and came home at midnight the following day x

You can self discharge against medical advice, you aren’t bound to stay there, though obviously it’s advised.
I would agree with Sarah and personally would look at having my maternity care at a different trust.

if you do leave against Medical advise, insurance can choose to not cover you. But yes usually it is 24hr minimum but can be up to 48 hrs depending on how you and baby recover

I’m in the UK - we don’t have insurance. I think the poster is also UK based. We are advised to stay in for 24+ hours but can leave before that as I mentioned.

Where I am it’s a minimum 48 hours

I had mine on a Monday morning and home by Tuesday afternoon.I had no complications, but was standard to stay in. Once the doctor had discharged me and baby we could go.

Depends on the hospital policy, mine was minimum 3days. I know ots a inconvenience but stay in hospital, I wished i stayed 5 days instead of the three, would have recovered a lot better

When I had my c section August 2022 I wasn’t released until a made a bowel movement I was honestly ready to go home because my bf wasn’t there to be with the dog.Depending on your healing process too.I was still walking with a lean my doctor said if I wanted to go home I had to stand up.I rather have stayed to have more help getting up.

In the UK, I was in for 24 hours after my emergency c section then we were discharged but I was told this was the soonest it could happen

In Canada you have to stay until you’re at the very least farting- ideally they want to see you being able to be up and moving around. Technically my baby - who had complications was cleared to go home before I was.
