I'm 20 weeks pregnant with my first baby, and I'm hoping to be able to breastfeed when he is born. I've had inverted/ flat nipples all my life and was wondering if this will prevent me from breastfeeding? I've not discussed this with my midwife yet, but has anyone got any advice? Thank you!

I found using the nipple shield helped with that until my baby got more experience breastfeeding. I could usually take it off after a few minutes. And now my son has no issues and we haven’t issued the shield since his first month

As above. I was told it’s not nipple feeding but breastfeeding and that really helped me mentally. Baby will learn your breast through practice and will be no issue

For me it was a little bit hard to get him to latch and then we had other problems so I didn’t end up breastfeeding him but I learned lots of things with him.
1. You could slightly pump before hand to already get that suction to pull out your nipple
2. You can start to erect your nipples before so make them hard. You can rub them and what not. And as you are doing that start to like pinch and pull them out to help make them longer and bigger. I mostly did this because I didn’t have time to just pump before.
Id also suggest making an appointment with a pediatric dentist to look for tongue and lip tie pretty soon after leaving the hospital. Depending on where you live some people do it in the hospital and some don’t. And some people don’t think your child had it at all. That’s why I suggest and actual kid dentist that knows what they are talking about. Even though I didn’t get to BF my son he still latched the month after we got it done. And with my daughter she started to latch

And feed much better after that as well and that definitely helped with the nipple problem

I wouldn’t suggest a nipple shield unless you really need it which it could be a good tool but don’t try it until you try other things first or if baby doesn’t want to latch at all because baby could get used to it then you might not be able to stop using it because baby will only use that

I also have flat/inverted nipples and was able to breastfeed! I found it quite painful at first but that has eased off. I am now exclusively pumping but that’s for different reasons.
I would suggest getting a little suction cup thing to help draw the nipples out if you don’t want to use nipple shields. Lansinoh do one on Amazon. I think it’s called latch assist.
Lots of nipple cream to help soothe after feeds and you should be absolutely fine!
Thank you everyone for your advise!

Ask the hospital before you deliver or the day of and see if they have nipple shields (they should!) And they'll show you how to use them as well
