Can’t get baby to sleep in bassinet 😭

my baby is 6 weeks almost 7, and he will not sleep in his bassinet what so ever. I can probably count the days he has on 1 hand. Hes a contact sleeper and deals with digestion issues, but I’m struggling so much 😭 it gets to the point when he sleeps on my chest he’s 100% okay but during the night we end up doing unsafe sleep practices because I fall asleep as well. I also have PPA that everytime I wake up I get so upset I had feel asleep, I’m trying to practice safe sleep because I don’t want 1 mistake to cost us. What can I possibly do to get him to sleep in his bassinet 🥺

Try swaddling if you haven’t already that’s literally the only way I get my baby to sleep in his bassinet cause he loves contact sleeping too if I don’t swaddle him he wakes up within 10 seconds

Avatar

we do! Unfortunately I can’t swaddle his arms in because he starting rolling into his side the first week of birth, but I did buy a swaddle sack with arms out. And it helps sometimes but he hates laying on his back it seems like 😢

Avatar

Can you try to follow the safety rules and cosleep safely?

Avatar

Try a blanket sack! My baby girl is 5weeks now and she’s not a fan of the swaddle only way I got her to sleep in the bassinet was with the blanket sacks. That way arms are free and can still move around

Avatar

my bed is too soft unfortunately/: working to get a firmer one. I even tried putting a mat on the floor 😭 he’s not the biggest fan on laying on his back so even co sleeping safely he struggles. We’ve maybe co slept 2-3 times but other than that he still cries.

Avatar

When he’s in a deep sleep I transfer him and hold onto him, sometimes he can and other times he start grunting. Which I sssume is active sleeping, but he grunts so much or is super gassy that it wakes him up or he ends up spitting up on himself 😭

My colicky baby has a hard time with the bassinet, too. We've had some luck with putting an electric blanket in the bassinet while you do the last feed before putting him down. Also, put a small item like a burp cloth in your shirt. After you've fed him and he's been asleep for 15-20, take the heated blanket out and lay him down. Place the burp rag next to him so he can smell you still. It's not 100% but it's pretty good.

My baby refuses the bassinet as well and loves to co sleep but I had to get my own sleep I was so exhausted!! The best thing that has worked for me so far is swaddling baby with his arms out and putting on his side in a boppy pillow so it feels like someone is cuddling him! It has worked wonders! Baby slept for 5 hours in there! (He is 5weeks+ 4days)

I’m having this same issue with my almost 7 week old baby girl. She has major reflux so anytime I lay her on her back, she spits up and is uncomfortable. I’ve honestly just been sleeping in a reclining chair with her on my chest and she sleeps so well. She doesn’t like to be swaddled so that doesn’t work either. The only way both of us can get some sleep is if I have her on my chest in the recliner 😭

Avatar

And a pasi! He fussies for a bit but I add some lullaby’s and he’s out! Takes about 15 minutes before he’s sleeping

Avatar

Even with them being not recommended and recognized as unsafe sometimes if it works, it works. I was dealing with close to the same thing. I'm still trying different things to see what really works but I've learned being swaddled, a binki, soft lighting and some lullabies and laying on his stomach has helped so much.

Avatar

this has literally been me! I just get so much anxiety because it’s unsafe and I see so many accidents and it freaks me out. My hubby will watch us nap for 3 hours so I feel more comfortable but I struggle from 12am-4/5am. I use a boppy around my waist always and that helps but he’s starting to move and adjust himself when he’s in my chest and sometimes I’m out cold (unless he cries I wake up) but I get scared he’s gonna be in a weird position

Avatar

I’m trying to introduce paci, he’s not a big fan yet lol. I have so many different kinds and he’s just not interested lol but I heard that helps a lot!

Avatar

I had this problem too. There are some people who give cosleeping advice and they recommend buying a firm mat and putting it on top of your mattress (below the sheet), in the area where the baby will be sleeping. You can put the baby to sleep on the area where the mat is and this is safe. They have already tested some mats and found them to be firm enough and have included them in their website:

I co sleep and my little one only cries when she looses her nipple or nookie

Avatar

I think that being on a reclining chair with your baby on your chest is dangerous. Cosleeping while following the safety rules is actually safer than this.

Avatar

I ended up going the co-sleeping route , even though I swore I never would while pregnant . I clear the area of all blankets and pillows and I made sure not to have a pillow topper or foam on my mattress . He sleeps way better that way for me , and in turn I’m getting sleep. I also have begun side lying breastfeeding for when he wakes up at night. He initiated this as we were sleeping and I woke up to him clawing at my shirt trying to nurse lol. While I was nervous at first , I have now grown more confident in the C cuddle position and always wake up in the exact same spot . Took some adjusting for my anxiety to let me sleep but we are almost at two months and have got it down

Avatar

Hey! It’s totally okay if they lean or slightly roll to one side. I use a sleep sack and then the Velcro attachment for his arms to stay down. He rolls over but never so much that he would be face down…that’s pretty common and not a danger according to my pediatrician. My boy also loves to fall asleep on my chest and we do that for at least 30 min then swaddle and put him in the bassinet…pretty much works every time.

Avatar

I also agree with this !

Avatar

Having the same issues! My 1 month old hates the bassinet and being swaddled. She ends up grunting, squirming and crying so loud that we don’t get any sleep. We did get a sleep sack and used it last night. It was okay, but she’s still annoyed with it. She loves holding her hands, so the sleep sack allows that. I’m so frustrated and exhausted. I end up contact sleeping and falling asleep. Just wanted you to know that you aren’t alone!

Avatar

i’m in the same boat!! she will sleep so soundly on my chest but the moment i put her in the bassinet she’s wide awake again, we’ve tried everything. she does take a paci but she’s been rolling to her side so it falls out, and she doesn’t like having her arms contained so full swaddling is a no go);

Avatar

I was so concerned about the side sleeping! She started doing that the first week. The pediatrician said it was fine since she can’t flip all the way over. She will take the paci sometimes, but like you said, it falls out on her side…I know that I wasn’t going to get much sleep, but I’m starting to breakdown from it all. 😭

Avatar

same here. i’ve had a couple breakdowns just this week because im so exhausted from everything and i feel like even when i do sleep it doesn’t do anything

Avatar

Rolling over at this point is due the newborn scrunch! He can’t roll fully to his stomach yet, so lay him down on his back and if he naturally scrunches and turns to his side it’s fine!! I also suggest white noise, I don’t use it every night but when my girl is extra fussy it works wonders. White noise and light patting on her tummy/side

Avatar

Omg same following bc I need help

Avatar

@Caitlyn that's the newborn curl and is fine. They usually grow out of that. Have you tried swaddling arms in recently?

Avatar

There’s no way baby can fully roll over at that age so it’s safe to swaddle baby. It’s due to the newborn scrunch and is a normal reflex in newborns but they don’t have enough neck strength to fully roll so don’t be afraid to swaddle. My baby is 8 weeks and sleeps great at night in her crib with a sound machine and arms up swaddle. She slept alright in the bassinet but once we moved her to the crib she started sleeping amazing for us

Avatar

Have you tried getting your scent on his bedding? Laying a heating pad down prior to putting him in? (Removing before he goes in)

Lots of other great suggestions in here too. White noise, pacifier(I get it, my second baby isn't wanting a paci or swaddle either)

Also just repetition and consistency. Keep trying to do the thing that you want. It may fail alot. But eventually they get more used to it, and it works better and better. Mine sleeps OK at night, but now I'm working at getting her to nap Independently during the day.

Avatar

that’s what I thought to but he rolls over enough to where he’s face down and I felt I was restriction him with his arms swaddled I do use an arms up/out swaddles because he was regardless trying to take his arms out of it anyways lol.

I was thinking maybe trying his crib and seeing if he likes that more because of the mattress instead of the board and fluff mattress the bassinet has.

Avatar

I haven’t but not due to only rolling over. He fights and tries to remove his hands. I have swaddle sacks with arm up/out and he likes those! Just still wants to lay on tummy and not back

Avatar

definitely try it! I know the recommendation is to keep baby in your room with you till 6 months or whatever but I put both my kids in their cribs in their own rooms at 5 weeks old for both of them and they both slept remarkably better that way. My son is 19 months old now and goes to sleep for a nap and bedtime all on his own within 10 minutes of being placed in his crib and has been a great independent sleeper since he was 6 months old. Hoping the same for my daughter now. She already gives us 5-7 hour stretches at 7 weeks old since moving her to her crib at 5 weeks and I have no regrets

Avatar

My son also was and still is a tummy sleeper once he started rolling that’s how he slept for the longest time. He’s just now starting to sleep on his back for periods of time. Once they can roll on their own it’s deemed safe to sleep on their bellies. Good luck to you!!

Avatar

do you mind sending a picture of what you mean by "blanket suck"? I find this interesting.

Avatar

Thank you guys for all the replies btw!! I will be trying these tips and seeing if maybe it works! Fingers crossed 🤞🏽

I have a 4 week old and we co sleep too. Baby will not do crib or bassinet. I want to break the habit but so hard. It's takes so many contacts naps just to make baby sleep on his own.

Avatar

I am in the same boat. My son only falls asleep on mine or daddy’s chest. I can usually move him to our in bed co sleeper lounger if it’s nap time, but half the time I fall asleep with him on my chest at night cause I am exhausted. Then wake up and can’t move him to his bassinet or co sleeper without a huge fit. I am trying the sleep sack but he likes to sleep with his hands by his face. Daddy sleeps through literally everything so I’m the one not getting any sleep. I don’t want to contact sleep cause I’m a light sleeper and haven’t slept well unless daddy lets me go take a nap by myself in a separate room during the day. Cause literally every cry, or sound I wake up to!

Hi! The only way I get my LO to sleep in the bassinet is to rock her for 1-2 hours using either the baby playlist on Spotify or the “piano lullabies for babies” on Pandora. I use white noise on the Hatch but anything that plays it could work I’m sure. My LO needs to have her arms out too, she fights if they aren’t. Currently using a sleep sack called “happiest baby” that allows her arms to be out but she’s still swaddled. Hope everyone’s suggestions help!

Avatar

I had that problem too, baby girl hated the bassinet but now she sleeps through most nights in it. What I did was as soon as she’s in a deep enough sleep I put her in it. I would notice she didn’t mind being in there during the day but hated it at night. You have to just keep trying honestly and it takes time and patience for them to get used to it. I also happens the have the bassinet that come down on one side. So putting it right up next to the bed and sleeping align with it so she can see my face helped a lot. Also I learned she hated having her hands swaddled down. So I got a sleep sac instead so her hands are up but she still kind of swaddled. Also I learned she prefers to not wear clothes under the swaddle she loves being naked so I had to adjust temp in the house so she could be that way.

When my boys who are now 16 and 17 years old were babies it was recommended to side sleep or belly sleep. I feel like every few years they change what is recommended. Just like they tell you every child is not the same with milestones or learning. Not every baby is the same in what is comfortable for them. My baby girl is 5 weeks 4 days old she would not sleep on her back swaddled or unswaddled and would not sleep in the bassinet. So just like our boys we co-sleep and she sleeps on her belly if she's not in my arms cuddled up. I don't feel like I can be the best mom I can be when I am exhausted and crying with her. I feel like you just have to do what is best for you and your baby.

AITA

In the uk there is an outbreak of meningitis, in a specific area mainly. My BD has family from that area and decided to go and meet up with them, I said if he does then he cannot have contact with the kids for 7-10 days after incase he picks anything up. Am I being over dramatic? I reallyyy don’t want my young kids getting anything serious

Baby clothes

Just out of curiosity, why do parents love zipper onesies?

Don’t get me wrong, I tried zipper ones it’s easy to zip in and out when putting it on the first time and taking it out, but I find it difficult when changing diapers especially when baby is asleep.

I prefer those kimono style buttons where it’s easy to button or too down button with crotch snaps.

Is everyone thinking the same or different? Lol

This might rattle some people

Ok, this might get a bit long, and a bit bumpy, so get comfy and buckle up.

So about a week or 2 ago, there was a post on here regarding sleepovers. Not letting their child go to them as you can't trust who'll be at the house etc.

Now, given recent incidents in nurseries and schools, plus my own experience back in the 90s, I am more concerned about sending my child to nursery and later school than I am to a friend's house for a sleep over.

The other day a man was jailed for abusing children at the nursery he worked at. A woman has been arrested for sleeping with an underage boy and then getting pregnant by a different underage boy while on bail for the first offence.

Young girls and boys get sexually harassed and bullied when at school, not all of them. But more than you think. And not just by other kids, but by adults who we as parents are trusting to look after our kids.

A sleepover, is a more controlled environment, with only a handful of people coming into contact with your child. A school, a club etc there can be 100s of people coming into contact with your child.

I was targeted at 7 years old by the owner of a prominent private school. Thankfully, I wasn't SA'd. In year 5 of primary school, I started to develop early, I was harassed by the boys and teachers made remarks about how my uniform didn't fit right, always "adjusting it" around my chest and legs.

Years 7-9 of secondary school were hell. But it was all under the guise of "we're just messing around". A teacher twanging my exposed bra strap (none uniform day) is not "messing around".

Boys pinning me down trying to rip open my shirt to see my breasts.

I fear for my daughter. I hope she takes after my father's family, flat chested.

We need to educate all our children, what is acceptable behaviour. And to come to us, as their parents should ANYTHING happen.

At this point I’m not enjoying motherhood

My 22 month old is horrendous at the moment🫣 biting, hitting, pushing, pulling and shoving not only adults but children he also wants what other children have and will just snatch it away from them.

We repeat ‘nice hands’ ‘be gentle’ ‘let’s share’ etc

But how do I make him understand what he’s doing isn’t very nice? At the end of the day I feel like I’ve just been saying his name all day and nothing else.

What can I do?

Dummy

My baby has had a dummy since about 2 weeks old (now 5 months) and over the course of the last month we weaned her off it during the day only for naps and night (which was fine) and then 5 days took it completely away during the day.

The first day no dummy was fine, the second bit rougher. But now it feels impossible she just moans and cries all the time it takes ages for her to go down to sleep (she’s always been an amazing sleeper)

I thought it was meant to get better as time went on not worse. I’m at my wits end I dunno what to do.

Currently typing this as she screams uncontrollably in the car and I cry with her cos I can’t do anything.
