I need help. My son has become very physically aggressive towards me, especially at naps and bedtime. For the most part he is happy, playful, smart, and active but when it comes time for bed or nap or sometimes while we are playing, he will start hitting me, pulling hair, trying to bite me or spit on me. It is very disturbing and I don't know what to do. I have tried many approaches but ultimately end up getting very upset and needing my husband to take over. It's like he hates me in that moment. But when I leave, he is crying for me. I have no reason to think he is witnessing this behavior at daycare, I asked, and they always give updates on his day. He only goes to daycare at most 3 days per week, usually just 2 days. Anyone experiencing this?

Mine is the same way! Following this post!

Unfortunately it’s developmentally appropriate behavior. My son (2) is also going through this phase and it takes a lot of calm breathing to get through the day sometimes. All you can do is remain calm and be instructive+supportive. My son will fling himself at bedtime, head but me the walls, bite, hit, kick. It’s a hard phase to get through but you’ve got this. It’s incredibly hard. Protect yourself and protect them. Remain calm, explain to them why you are have to hold them until they calm down if you choose that route, or why you had to get up. They are having “big feelings” because they don’t want to go to bed, do something etc. Staying calm can be challenging and having to manage their big feelings can be exhausting. You will get through this mama. It’s amazing that you are switching off with your husband when you feel yourself loosing your calm. This is EXACTLY what you should be doing. You are doing much better than you think.

I'm assuming you have a sleep routine of some sort. Try adding some warning before it starts. We started doing a 5 minute timer and that helped us. We simply tell him we are setting it, make sure he sees it and remind him when it goes off we will clean up and get ready for sleep (bed/nap). We have been doing this for like 2 months now and I would say 8/10 times he will help put toys away and move onto the routine.
As someone once told me...imagine you are deep into something you enjoy and all of a sudden someone come to you and days put it down, we need to do this now, now, now. And that new thing isn't something you enjoy doing. Your going to be annoyed, you internalize it better as an adult, but your still annoyed by it. So is your kid.

Girl mine was the same. Didn’t change until daycare and everyday them mfs would “he had another good day mom” me to death! Low and behold, I have video footage of the class bully going around pushing and kneeing the smaller kids, I have video footage of teachers grabbing the children by their arms in an aggressive manner and talking to them with aggression (mind you my son and his classmates are 2!!!!). He came home and was displaying that behavior and I was suspicious because he wasn’t like that prior to daycare. But I am glad I have those videos because now I can confirm where he got it from….. so now I am correcting those behaviors and we are getting there but I feel it will take time
yes we have had the same bedtime routine for over a year; bath, book, bed. We give him many ques that bedtime is coming. Sometimes he puts his favorite toys "to bed" in his playroom, we shut thay door and take a bath. He is so wound up at bedtime and I haven't figured out how to get him to chill. We have different nightlight, we read several books, snuggle, but when he needs to lay down because it is actually getting late and it's time to actually settle down, he doesn't. And this is when he has been starting the aggressive behavior.
he goes to a daycare where there are other toddlers, no older kids, and I really trust them. No video cameras but he really likes it there. He also goes to a baby sitter some weeks when I pick up extra shifts and she has a wider range of ages but I asked her about him being aggressive and she praises him and what's crazy is he sleeps like an angel and both places.

Yeah, the class bully was an older toddler, maybe 2.5/2.75 yo but he was much bigger in size and height than the rest of the 2yo.
But yeah my son liked it too, until I pulled him out and was able to assess his true feelings. Kids that young are so forgiving and that type of stuff they sometimes learn by seeing it or having it done to them. I believe all toddlers go through the hitting stage due to trying to figure out their emotions but it shouldn’t be like they are attacking you…. Maybe try to give him some cuddles to keep him calm or if all else fails, talk to his pediatrician.
man I am anxious about taking him to daycare or the babysitter now. I wish we had put ourselves in a position where I could stay at home. I am only part time now but as a RN I have to be gone for 12+ hours when I do work.
