Paid leave Oregon

Do you have to wait til after you have the baby to apply for paid leave Oregon? The website said to have birth certificate ready. It usually takes even longer to receive that. I'm due May 24th but will likely go into labor earlier as my first was born at 38 weeks.

It was so ridiculous. I called and said that takes forever and they said a crib card from the hospital with my name and baby’s name on it with birth date and a doctors note with estimated due date would suffice.

I was also wondering the same thing.

So it wouldn’t let us sign up for it until 30 days before my time off started and then the state is just super slow. I’ve been off work I think almost 4 weeks and baby is almost 3 weeks and I still have received anything

I was told I have to apply 30 days in advance through my job and so does my husband. I’m due May 25 and we’re going to submit the request in a couple weeks to get it started.

@Tristan I won't be giving birth at a hospital. So do you think a note from my midwife with my due date would be enough? And would I be able to apply ahead of time, but only a month before my due date? This was so much simpler through work insurance last year! Lol

@Amanda It seems like your situation is different! We did not start receiving payments until almost 2 months post birth. Granted my school district went with a third party to help disburse with the state leave and they have made things more complicated in every way. I would definitely call whoever is in charge of yours/HR.

@Sara my husband gave his work time off notice this morning, and they said we have to do all of the paid leave application through PLO. His job may be ill-informed too, it's just so confusing. Did your job have a form for you to fill out?

@Andrea This was us too. It took until 2 months to get our first payment and we had to call almost everyday to follow up.

You can apply up to 30 days prior to your expected due date. I highly recommend applying as soon as you are allowed as they are slow to approve you! I wasn’t approved until about 2 months after I gave birth and I applied at that 30 days prior mark! My husband was approved within a month though which is ridiculous. You can also get a proof of birth form authorized by your midwife prior to giving birth. They just estimate your delivery date. The form is on the PLO website. Good luck!

@Madison you were able to submit an application through frances without proof of birth though?

You still have to submit a verification of birth form that’s signed by your doctor or midwife with your application.

@Tristan @Andrea what did you do for finances while waiting that long for benefits?

I never submitted a birth certificate just that form prior to my delivery

@Amanda We had to dip into our savings unfortunately :/

@Amanda my form was online, but my husband had to fill out a physical paper copy for his job. We both have to apply through the Oregon paid leave portal though. Based of the other comments I’m worried pay might be back dated 😞😞

@Katie okay, I'll try and get that from my midwife tomorrow! But is the application all through frances on the PLO website?

@Amanda we also had to dip in to our savings which thankfully my boyfriend is still working so that helps

@Amanda yes! But they are asking for it now

@Andrea yikes. Do you think renters and insurance companies would waive any late fees while waiting for the benefits? We definitely don't have 3 months of bills in our savings. We can maybe manage 2 months, but not any more.

@Katie where do I find the proof of birth form for my midwife to fill out? I'm searching their website and don't see it.

Yep! It says “expected delivery date” on there so you’re good! Just make sure they fill out their section properly and fully!

@Katie thank you! 😊

My understanding is that you fill out the medical leave form first, and it converts to family leave on the date of delivery.

I applied 30 days before my due date. You can get 2 weeks of pregnancy leave in top of the bonding leave. You can use an ob appt summary to provide proof of pregnancy and once baby is born provide verification of life birth from hospital. I got my first pay from them 1.5 months post birth
