Crib transition

We're moving to a new apartment in June. Not that this is urgent or anything but should I see if my son is ready to take the side off his crib now or wait til after we move and he's had some time to adjust? He has carpet now but his new room is hard wood so I'd be more nervous about him rolling out of bed there, even though I'd have cushion just in case in either place. My concern is transitioning him now and then him regressing and having sleep issues once we're in the new place
