Should I let my 4 1/2 month old sleep as much as he wants? Or should I try to keep him up during the day more so he will sleep better at night? I kind of just let him do his thing and sleep whenever but he is waking up every 3-4 hours at night still. It’s also hard trying to keep him awake because he gets so cranky and that always means he’s tired.

No I would not try to keep him awake ! If a baby is over tired they actually sleep worse at night and it makes them more restless ! And the better they do during the day for naps usually the better they sleep !
4 month olds should have 4/5 naps a day ! And their wake window is from 90-120 minutes .
The only time I suggest waking them is if they sleep over 2 hours . That’s usually when I wake my daughter .
And that’s because if they sleep too much during the day they can’t get in all the calories they need ! The more they eat during the day the less they will eat at night and hopefully lessen the amount they wake up in the night ! Hopefully that helps a little ?

Also as far as nights go I highly recommend following “ taking Cara babies” on Instagram she has great content and also really great classes !

I second the Taking Cara Babies! She says at this age you should try your hardest to keep them awake at least 90 minutes. She also says to wake them up to eat if it’s been 3 hours. That’s what we do and my daughter has been sleeping through the night since she was 7 weeks old.

My son is the same age rn I would just say let him sleep when he wants, but like try to implement a specific routine thru the day. like my son wakes up around 6:30-7am and goes to sleep at 7-7:30pm every night. He looooves taking a walk right when we wake up and then I come in give him his bottle he sleeps a little longer like 20-30 minute nap, wakes up he has like a 3-4 hour wake window of playtime then he gets another bottle takes a long nap the only one for the day usually like 1-2 hours then he has another 3-4 hour wake window, hangout, play, he has bottle he takes another short nap 20-30 minutes. when he wakes up I take him for a walk before the sun goes down and I bring him in get him in the bath by the time he’s dressed I give him his night night bottle and he’s out until 12-1 am when he wakes up hungry ready for another bottle! Idk I know people say you can’t put them on a routine but I just wrote down when he was napping and mapped out a routine around it and stuck with it

3.5 to 4.5 hour nap goal will give you 3, 4, or 5 day time naps depending on how long your little one naps. if they nap very very short it might look like 5 naps, if longer you could get away with 3. a common bedtime is 7-8pm but you might need to observe your baby and tweak it. try to get all their calories in the day or it doesn’t matter how hard you try to keep them asleep at night because hunger is different!

^^and ofc it’s not always gonna be perfect either but id just let him sleep(: think about it like we need sleep to heal and the babies need lots of sleep to grow too!

Sleep begets sleep. The more they nap, the more they sleep at night
