Guys, I really need help with this. Really considering seeing a therapist because I can see this affecting my mental health, as well as my relationship with my husband and in laws…if it hasn’t already.
Some context - my baby is 20 months old. Ever since he was a newborn, my MIL has made me feel uncomfortable. Every visit and encounter consisted of her making sure my son isn’t a “mama’s boy.” When she would see my son, she would say “no mama today” and put her hands up to block me. She would purposely hold him and take him to another room out of my sight so we wouldn’t see each other. She would make comments about how he’s so attached to me and how I should start bottle feeding and not breastfeed so that others can feed him too. She would look down upon contact napping. If we were at a restaurant, she would grab him out of his high chair and say she needs a minute with him and take him around the restaurant out of my sight. There’s so many more examples. It’s gotten to the point where every time I see her, I just feel like she doesn’t like the bond I have with my son and blames me for not having a bond with him.
It has made me resent her tbh. It makes me not want to see her. It makes me want to cry at just the thought of having to see her. So with that, we only see her once a month now compared to how we used to, which was every 1-2 weeks. She has noticed this and I can tell she is upset at me.
Plot twist. I’m pregnant. And I’m afraid she’s going to do this all over again with my second child. I don’t want to ruin my husband’s relationship with his family, but I really don’t want to see them. I don’t want her to take my kids away. I don’t want her to try and break my bond with them. I just don’t know what to do. I hate that I feel this way. The sad part is I know she’s a good person. I know it’s just the grandma in her. But I can’t help but feel this way.
I’m also a people pleaser and haven’t been able to tell her any of this. My husband has told her a couple of times but she never apologized to me. Just said that those weren’t her intentions. But I’m still very hurt and can’t let go of how she made me feel as a first time mama.
