hi, i’ve recently made the switch from normal sma pro to sma anti reflux formula. why is it to lumpy? i’m finding im making her bottles fresh every time. (i used to make up 4 bottles and leave them in the fridge when she was on normal sma pro) and once she’s finished there’s a ridiculous amount of formula clumped to the bottom of the mam bottles. what am i doing wrong? i tried making it with hot water but got told its supposed to be warm water as the formula doesn’t react well with hot water but still same issue, any advice?

I’ve only had the issue once but I always make them fresh as we’ve always been told don’t leave the milk ‘made’ for over 2 hours. Not quite sure if that’s correct but maybe it’s thicker than the normal one? Could be worth checking with a midwife or something if it keeps happening x

You have to make it with boiling water not warm water otherwise it won’t kill any bacteria and the formula won’t dissolve. Needs to be around 70 degrees . I leave mine 20-30 mins to cool down then make the bottles

i boil the kettle then put the boiling water in my rapid cooler then pour the cooled water into the bottle and add the scoops is that not right?

I’m not sure with the rapid, I’ve heard you shouldn’t use it for at least 3 hours after one and it has to be sterilised after every use , so I just make the bottles up for 24 hours and heat them up when needed

I had this issue with comfort milk (also very thick) the only way I’ve managed to stop the gloops is I boil the kettle, leave for 15 mins, pour the water into the bottles, then add the formal and swirl. Never had any lumps like this again!

If you’re using the rapid cool then you need to use the hot shot method or just use hot water as otherwise it will go clumpy. Anti reflux milk has thickener in it and it can’t be made up in advance as it continue to thicken x

I had the same issue as LO was on comfort formula for 3 months. I had the prep machine so when it did the hot shot, I shut the lid and shook the formula quite a lot and then checked the bottom and it was completely dissolved, it then added the cool water from the machine and again shook it vigorously and it mixed in very well. It did have a few bubbles/froth but I just added 2 drops of infacol at the top of the froth and gave it a little swirl and it got rid of the froth straight away. I hope it helps x

Reflux formula is a lot thicker than normal formula it helps it stay down and make the baby less sick. You need to just give it a good shake once you’ve put the hot shot in. X

@Sophie that's absolutely not right, sorry! You won't be killing any potential bacteria in the milk this way. You must add the formula to hot water

okay started adding the 4 scoops to 60 ml of boiling water then shaking it to dissolve the milk and then putting 60ml cooled water from the rapid cooker in and mixing together that way the formula dissolves and sterilises and it’s not boiling but not cold?

@Sophie I don't make bottles this way (I make in advance and store in fridge) but as long as you're adding the powder to hot water (at least 70 degrees) then that's fine x

i used to do it this way when she was on normal formula but the anti reflux congeales and goes clumpy in the fridge

I would suggest making the bottle up first then put it in the rapid cooler so the formula can dissolve, I don’t know about the anti reflux formula but normal sma has to be used with 70+° water
