Has anyone been prescribed sodium picosulfate to treat babies with constipation? This is the second time the drs have prescribed a laxative that explicitly says in the leaflet DO NOT GIVE TO UNDER 12s. The last one said under 5s, I tried it but it made him projectile vomit his whole bottle up. So I’m really reluctant to use it

It’s understandable to feel concerned about giving a medication that has warnings against use in young children. Sodium picosulfate is typically not recommended for children under 12 unless a doctor specifically advises its use, as it can have strong effects, including causing dehydration or discomfort in infants. In cases of pediatric constipation, doctors sometimes prescribe medications “off-label” when they believe the benefits outweigh the risks, but this should be carefully discussed with your healthcare provider.
If you’re uncomfortable using the medication due to past experiences or warnings on the leaflet, it’s a good idea to seek further clarification from the prescribing doctor. You could also ask about alternative treatments, such as changes in diet, other gentle laxatives specifically for babies, or non-medication approaches.

Is there a reason why they haven’t prescribed something like lactulose or movicol ?? How constipated is your little one ? My LB doesn’t go for up to 10 days at a time and he’s prescribed paediatric movicol 1/2 sachet and that really does the trick. I would definitely ask why they wouldn’t go with something like that as a first attempt over picosulfate
