Smear test whilst pregnant

Has anyone had a smear test whilst pregnant? I’m currently 9+3 and been told I’m due a smear test. Online some places say not to do one until after baby arrives and others say it’s fine. What’s your experiences and recommendations?

I dont think you can have it done whilst pregnant

They delayed mine until after I had my son - 10 weeks later I think.

I had to wait until I’d given birth (3 months after giving birth)

In the UK, you have to wait until 12 weeks after giving birth. If you've not had it yet, they'll probably ask when you last had one at your booking appointment so they can note it on your medical record. The letter is sent from a Central database that don't know you're pregnant and also it's an optional screening so some people don't have it anyway (personally I can't understand why you wouldn't. ) Once you've had baby, wait 3 months and book in for it

I delayed mine until I wasn’t pregnant anymore x

Thank you all so much🫶🏻

I had to wait 12 weeks after I gave birth for mine

You can have one - any positive tests in the past? If not, I think it would be reasonable to delay. I did it at my 6 week postpartum visit

I was due one and they said they wouldn’t do it, I waited until around 6 months PP to have it xx

I had a smear on the day I found out I was pregnant. Then a colposcopy further along. It’s all fine as long as they are aware!

I was due mine when pregnant and was advised to wait until after I gave birth and I booked it in a couple months after xx

They were fine with doing mine while pregnant (UK) but I delayed It as I wasn't feeling comfortable. I had it about 12 weeks post partum

You can’t have them done whilst pregnant and you shouldn’t have them done for a year after either - I’ve recently trained to do them as I’m a nurse so this is 100% correct. Results won’t be accurate so it’s unnecessary and a waste of time.

@Emma I had one 3 months after my birth and online says 12 weeks, is this new guidance?

I happened to be due during both my pregnancies and had them done both times, I believe at 12 weeks and 16 weeks if I remember correctly. I didn't have any problems and never heard of it potentially being a problem until this post

@Elle Yes it’s the latest, they should be asking when you go if there’s any chance you could be pregnant and if so deferring it for a year after having baby

I was on a yearly review anyway due to persistent HPV so didn’t want to put it off another year. Probably would have done otherwise

I was due for mine also when I got pregnant but the doctor said we’re going to wait because since I’m pregnant the results can turn back abnormal due to pregnancy and my cervix changing.

I waited until after I gave birth

Just ring them and say you’re pregnant. They’ll defer the reminder for a year.

I had one before I realised I was pregnant. Speak with your surgery and see what they say!

Had mine after birth

I had a smear done as my pregnancy test was negative but a few days later it were positive but all is ok but if it had been a positive pregnancy test then I would have delayed it until after baby arrives just to be on the safe side!

Can't have it done until after pregnancy is what my OB advised

I was told no when I went for mine around that stage and they said come back around 3 months after birth of baby.

I had one at 8 weeks and it was all fine! I was told they only recommend not to because sometimes it makes the results come out abnormal, but mine was fine (possibly because I was early in pregnancy)

I was told I had to wait until after birth for mine.

I’m was advised to delay until at least 3 months after birth

I was due one when I was pregnant and they advised to not do it until after the baby’s born x
