I’m a solo mum by choice and my son was born in July. In early October my dad had a horrific accident and is paralysed from the neck down for life. He has been in hospital ever since and I’ve been taking each day as it comes but trying to balance looking after my son and visiting my dad and also looking after my mum has finally taking its toll and I’m really struggling. Every day gets harder and harder. Shortly after the accident I requested counselling and it finally started two weeks ago. I love my son so much but I feel overwhelmed and feel like i can’t breathe.

It won't feel like it now but it will get easier. Getting counselling shows you know when you need help. Do you have any friends or family who you could lean on for help? Them having LO for an hour, or doing some housework for you will make such a difference. Napping when LO naps can help of you're tired. Just remember, us solo mums have more strength and resilience in us then anyone else, so I know you can do it despite all the pain and hard work 💜
Normally my mum has been helping but we are also currently trying to rearrange the house for my dad’s return at the end of April/May and she’s got too much going on. As for friends most of the work and just don’t seem to understand how big a challenge this is mentally. I’m trying to push through but it’s so hard. I do sleep at night most of the time but it’s so disturbed. I keep worrying about the future or about my dad’s accident as I was the one that found. It’s all just a lot…

That sounds like a lot. Talking everything through with your counsellor will help, but if you've got good friends, try talking to them about how you feel, what you're struggling with, and anything you'd like help with. Good friends will help when they know the full story. Just help them understand. I can't imagine what you are going through, but each day as it comes as you're doing. Being a mum.is hard work without all the extra thing happening for you. Reach out, you might be surprised.

Hi,
I’m so sorry to hear about your dad, it’s no wonder you’re struggling, I’m impressed you can even string a sentence together - I’m not sure I’d be able to.
I’m a solo mum too, if you’d like to contact me directly I’d be happy to chat or offer any practical help I can.
Lizzie
thank you!
