help!

So my daughter is 17 months old and she can say quite a few words.. but she refuses to say please and thank you and gets upset when told to say itšŸ™ƒ my parents always say ā€œyou’ve got to teach her mannersā€ and i’m like yes i’m trying !!! Other than that she’s very sweet, affectionate, loves kisses and hugs.. just not please and thank you.
Any tips?
TIA

Ummmm…. She is only 17 months old lol she seems to be doing great! I think you can give her a pass for ā€˜please and thank you’ for now :)

thank you😭 i thought the same thing.. but my parents made it seem like im doing a horrible job because she doesn’t say those two things much

My kid says thank you. I have absolutely no idea where he picked it up and I've never asked him to say please. At 17 months, I'm just grateful he's learning words I also know that he has no idea what please and thank you actually mean. I don't plan to start teaching him to say them until he can understand why and what they mean.

My baby isn’t saying many words yet, maybe like 5 or 6 total. It’s so easy for us to feel like we arnt doing enough when other people tell us how our baby should be doing. But they will learn in time and we can just do our best :) our babies are wonderful just the way they are and we should just enjoy them :)

Honestly, I was worried as well, but my daughter can say a few words so I went and got her assessed and they said she’s pretty normal for her age and that everything’s OK. Let them learn and exploreeeeeee šŸ«‚ ā™„ļø

My 3 year old niece is just now saying please and thank you consistently but still has to be prompted.

If you want advice to try and get ur LO to implement it more just do a LOT of please and thank you modeling. I dont prompt my son to say it so it comes naturally to him and he’s just starting to get the hang of thank you. He said it once unprompted today when i gave him a snack and copied my please before bed time lol. Try not to force it because she might not do it out of independence. Shes 17 months old and toddlers are very independent at this stage so manners shouldnt be such a big thing. Modeling it is the best learning tool and being forced to do something just because of societal pressure/norms isnt something anyone likes. Toddlers learn best by example and not by force because theyre basically mini baby teens and want to learn the world on their terms😭

My 18 month old only says mama dada and bye …

Avatar

Please and thank you are more complex words for them to say. At 17 months they maybe know 3-5 words. Most likely mama dada bye and then maybe more or ball something like that.

I think she’s doing great for her age. My son is about the same age and isn’t talking. We taught him please in sign language which is just rubbing your chest in a certain direction and it’s helped reduce some tantrums when he doesn’t get his way fast enough. I just started by taking his hand and rubbing his chest while saying please before I gave/did what he was asking for. He picked it up super fast and now does it all the time.

Tell your parents that she’s only been alive for 17 MONTHS. I think you can give her a pass…right now her brain is developing more important skills than that. You can model how to say it but if she gets scolded every time she should’ve said it I think it will only make it not want to say it

Avatar

mine also randomly started saying thank you one day as well. The cutest thing! I’m thinking our family just says that to each other a lot and he picked it up.

Tell your parents they need to model the behavior more

Avatar

You can totally model these things but it’s unrealistic to expect a 17 month old to consistently use those words. Many babies only have a few words total at 17 months!

You can also tell them you are working on more functional language before moving to other things (like help, eat, drink, up etc.)

Avatar

wasn’t really saying that modeling was the real ā€œissueā€. More that grandparents that insist that a 17 month old say please and thank you probably don’t say it a lot themselves

Avatar

I was just responding to the message generally not to your comment specifically.

you make a great point šŸ˜†

She is probably confused, she's only 17 months old, I wouldn't even try to get her to say that until she's closer to 2 if even that early

Avatar

I’m sure a 17 month old doesn’t know what words mean like that. It’s take time for them to understand the concept and how to use it when they are talking. This age is basically starting from scratch on how to move their mouths and pronounce words. 2 and 3 years old say thank you and please . 17 month old is too young IMO

facts !! i agree. i’ll keep modeling itā˜ŗļø definitely not going to listen to my mom and withhold whatever item she wants until she says thank you 🄲

Help! First time mum -

I have a 4 month old and now all of a sudden when he’s been asleep for 1hr30/2hrs he will wake up screaming (high pitched) I’ve tried winding him sometimes that helps, I’ve tried bicycle legs & bringing his knees up but that doesn’t seem to help but he brings his knees up himself sometimes but nothing happens. I’ve noticed since the 4 month mark he has started to struggle passing wind downwards! Any tips?

Crying during feeding

Hey mams! My girl is 6 weeks on Monday and is having so much trouble with feeding. It doesn’t happen every feed but more often than not she will start a bottle and just start crying as if she’s in pain and she can’t take the milk. I think it’s trapped wind but I genuinely don’t know what to do it’s so pitiful to see her not be able to feed! She’s formula fed and on HiPP Organic.
Anyone else been in this position? I’m pretty sure it’s just a bit of trapped wind that she needs to fart out but can’t! If anyone has any advice I’d be very grateful as I think I may need to tape my eyelids open soon šŸ˜‚

No more naps! 10 month old

For a few days now my 10m old has fought her 2 daily naps. Normally her wake windows were 3-4 hours and she is now eventually napping after a 6 hour wake window. Today was only one nap, she skipped the second one. Used to nap like clockwork so I’m wondering if anyone else is experiencing this? Also very unsettled most nights and doesn’t sleep well at all
