Newborn randomly gags/chokes during and after feeds — normal

My baby is turning 6 weeks old, and since around 2 weeks, I've noticed she randomly gags or chokes — sometimes while feeding and sometimes even hours after feeding. I mostly breastfeed her. When she gags, I usually pick her up and pat her back, and she seems okay afterward. Once she even spat up after I did this. It's honestly terrifying when it happens. I just want to know — has anyone else's baby done this? Is this normal? Any tips for how to handle it better would also be appreciated!

My daughter did this but not as frequent. It was caused by her intaking too much at once. We spaced out her feedings more and she doesn’t do it anymore. Make sure to consult with her pediatrician though👍🏻

How often did your daughter gag in a day?

My baby does this during feedings. My letdown is fast and he feeds aggressively. It’s just that he’s getting too much. I usually try to watch for signs he’s not swallowing and get him off before he chokes. Definitely talk to your pediatrician though!

@Angela I see, Did he gag even after hours of feeding?

Not normally. He usually only gags or chokes during feedings.

It could be she’s taking in too much at one time. Maybe space out her feedings and try the koala hold position if you’re breastfeeding.❤️

Could just be a fast let down. Might try laying down and laying her on you so she has to pull it out instead. That's what helped my daughter

my son used to do the same thing he's 4 weeks he's bottle fed and I would do the same thing if he starts to choke and gag just sit him up and pat his back and give him a few seconds before giving the bottle back it's definitely terrifying tho he doesn't no it as much now I think he needed to learn his own way of sucking the bottle because he was tryna eat pretty fast before

Mine also does this during feeding and randomly other times. Honestly I think he's either just playing with his tongue and gagging himself, or trying to poop. 🤦🏻‍♀️ He always seems fine and doesn't need to be burped or anything.

According to our pediatrician, all babies have some form of acid reflux that goes away after about 6 months when their stomach finally turns sideways. They just do this when they are trying to prevent spit up. I'm currently going through this again with my second baby

My son does this. Sometimes it scares me
