Hey my little girl is 11 weeks and exclusively breastfeeding.
She's started to constantly unlatch and look up at me sooo many times. She also has started doing a shallow latch and is quite literally pinching the ends of my nipples with her mouth which makes me wince and make her jump.
My nipples are so sore! Almost like at the beginning š
Any help or advice or anything at all would be much appreciated! I want it to not hurt again š

Commenting because I'm literally going through the same exact thing and also need insight⦠We breast-fed and then the second day in the hospital she was admitted to the NICU for two weeks and was on a feeding tube and then put to the bottle so she got adjusted to bottles so I have been exclusively pumping and I've been constantly trying to re-introduce breast-feeding and my daughters doing the same thing shallow latching but will stare into my soul doing it and then unlatch and cry she's 13 weeks⦠I have more success in the middle of the night when I'm in the nursery and I quickly change her from the bottle to the nipple I get a little more productivity that way because I think it's darker she doesn't see that's at least my thought on it lol or what I tell myself⦠but I'm going through the same thing

ah not quite the same as we have established breastfeeding and haven't had any issues until now š it's all just come out of nowhere!
Good luck with your breastfeeding journey. Don't give up! Z

I guess i hold on to my two days I was able to breast-feed before everything happened as hope lol⦠You also! Everything will work outšš½šš½ Babies are so unpredictable you got this also!!

Maybe double check if she might have a lip or tongue tie. Thatās what was making it hard for my son to latch.

Alright Iām here to help a lil lol
When she does the shallow latch, force a unlatch and have her re-latch deeper by grabbing your breast and putting it her mouth. It has definitely help me cause my son does the same.
Get used to the distracted feeding as they become more nosey lol
Also double check that she doesnāt have lip tie or tongue tie.

my son had both lip and tongue tie. Got them released and now he latches like a champ.

How do I check for lip or tongue tie?
Is it something that develops as she's not struggled before

it is something they usually have since birth, but it doesnāt always create a problem. Talk to a lactation consultant. My mother-in-law who is an IBCLC, caught it. She recommended I speak to someone who is trained in spotting them and doing therapy to help get ready for the procedure of releasing the tie.
The doctor who released the ties for my son was amazing. They use a laser instead of a scissor these days and it takes a minute for the procedure to be done.

For breastfeeding help I can highly recommend contacting the National Breastfeeding Helpline. They helped me on many occasions throughout our journey. They are available to contact 24/7.

I was also coming to say the same as Nai, we had a similar issue and I had a lot of guidance from the infant feeding team/ national breastfeeding team.
You must initiate the unlatch and then relatch them properly/deep latch. the reason they cry/fuss and pop on n off, is cz they're not getting all the milk from the shallow latch... which will also help the pain!
to avoid distraction, as baby got older, I always went to the bedroom, curtains closed, sleep environment set, fed n put down for naps- which helped us loads.
hope it gets better soon xx

The best advice I can give is to avoid distractions. At around 3 months old, I had to start feeding my son in a quiet, dimly lit room. Any noise and he would turn his head bringing my nipple with, or he would slightly unlatch and suck which hurt tremendously. I was constantly unlatching and relatching him. It did get better though when he was about 5 months old.

Mine would do this when either not that hungry or in a room with too many distractions.

Oddly enough some babies need to go to a chiropractor. My son mouth was tight and it couldāve been due to a quick birth. He didnāt have tongue tie or lip tie but when he would latch it would hurt because he wouldnāt do a deep latch.
The dr can check for tongue tie and lip tie. They donāt always look until you make complaints.

My little one was easily distracted once she was about 12 weeks and became more aware of things, we had to feed in a quiet spot. Almost 5 months on sheās multitasking ie feeding and staring at the distraction š
As for the shallow latch, force an unlatch and relatch encouraging a deeper latch. Nipple balm will ease pain. However see if thereās a breastfeeding group about for advice too
Keep at it :)

Ah distracted eater. Ur gonna have to sit somewhere still and quiet, maybe even in a dark room. Breastfeeding fun ppl don't talk about. It eventually ends but yea Breastfeeding won't be relaxing in front of the TV anymore.
