Hi, I’ve had pre-eclampsia with both my children. The first time it happened right at the end when I was in labour at 42 weeks and the last time happened at 37 weeks which was quite bad if I’m honest. I know that if I get pregnant again there’s an increased risk of developing it again, but is there a way I could keep myself and baby safe throughout the pregnancy and after I’ve given birth as well? I’ve struggled with my blood pressure since having the last baby and I take medication for it but seems to be getting better. Just terrified of something bad happening to the baby or myself.

Hey! PP Pre-E mama (41 weeks) and advocate. Currently expecting my 2nd. It is always good to have a healthful diet just for overall health and recovery, but research has shown that it will not make a difference in whether you get preeclampsia or not.
The only thing shown to prevent preeclampsia is low dose aspirin, and calcium in some very specific populations with extremely low dietary intake of calcium; research keeps showing that preeclampsia is not a lifestyle illness. You did nothing wrong momma, preeclampsia happens when a placenta is having issues. My physician and I agreed that I would start on a low dose aspirin at 12 weeks. Have you discussed this with your physician?

@Schannon I agree with you. I had eclampsia at 24 weeks. It was so bad that I lost the baby immediately and almost lost mine. During my 2nd pregnancy, I was put on a low dose of aspirin starting at 13 weeks until 38 weeks. My blood pressure was normal throughout my pregnancy. For my 3rd pregnancy, I didn't need it at all. Everything was perfect. The only thing I changed was reducing my salt intake, daily walks, and weekly appointments with my OB. The best thing you can do is beat it before it happens. Always check ur bp at home and immediately go to the hospital if u have a slight headache or blurred vision. Additionally, there are home remedies u can look at online during ur pregnancy to manage ur bp. Most importantly, never ignore the early signs. That was my biggest regret, and I had to deal with the consequences.

The loss of a child is a horrible event to endure, thank you for keeping us all educated on the dangers and what to look out for. I agree, we do everything we can as mommas for ourselves and our children. I’m hoping more research goes into prevention and treatments because pre-e/pp pre-e, can move quickly and can have various outcomes. There is research stating that women who do have pre-eclampsia during pregnancy, in subsequent pregnancies (IF) it does develop its later and less severe. Yours gives me hope. After my pregnancy I did have a lot of lifestyle changes and also so did hubby, the emphasis is just as much on their success as ours, since the placenta is 50/50. Thank you 🩷
